Hey all!
I'm so glad I found this board cause it's about squalor a bit more than hoarding but also hoarding and clutter.
Mine is just squalor. Straight trash everywhere. I own very little things, just some clothes and stuff, live in a studio. It's disgusting. Flies. I hate it but I'm lost. I can only work and I take meds for depression and my eating disorder and see a therapist.
Broke down a week ago at work because I can't understand why I can't get it together. Ended up hospitalized and they started treating me for ADHD. And now that I can focus my thoughts it's like I can identify what I'm feeling which hopefully will help me figure out the other parts that cause me to live in squalor (trauma, depression, binge eating disorder). And I might get help from a basic skills therapist.
Got out today, I'm home, anxious, really upset because the carpet beetles I thought I got rid of months ago are back. But I think I might be able to tackle some of the trash tomorrow because I feel more motivated, I hope I won't just keep procrastinating.
But I did just get home and it's 8p my time and I got up at 6:30a and have been going to bed around 9.
Trying not to feel guilty that I can't do everything right now but I did stuff today. I deserve to relax before bed.

Welcome!
You are home. There are many people here that have "been there, done that" You will find support and encouragement in any of the working threads on a daily basis. Look for WIT or Workalong.

Welcome Spencer! Yes, many of us have "been there, done that, got the Tshirt". Some of us even donated the Tshirt while decluttering! Share your challenges and you will get good n ideas from other posters One thing that has always helped me is having multiple trash cans or bins in different rooms AND having a regular day I empty the trash cans. Can. You fill. One bag or box or container and immediately take it to m your yeah disposal area? Would that work for you?

rainontheground. Glad you are back home and the hospital was helpful. Getting treated for undiagnosed adhd will help you. Having a good therapist will be helpful too. Joy has excellent advice about keeping multiple trash containers around. Can you put one in every place that trash tends to accumulate. I know living in a studio, you don’t have a lot of space. Even small wastebaskets in the worst places will help. There are workalong threads here which are very helpful. Post what you do and others will cheer you on. That may seem silly or small but I’ve found the cheering and support here really helped me getting moving, especially in the beginning.
Do you have a working vacuum cleaner? Focus on getting the trash out first. Then when the floor is clear, you can deal with the carpet beetles. It’s much easier to vacuum when the floor is clear. Dana White suggested one daily to be sweeping the kitchen floor everyday. I always thought that sweeping the floor everyday, especially when I was working, was kind of a waste of time, that one person couldn’t make that much mess. Honestly though, her reason is that sweeping every day means that stuff doesn’t get a chance to accumulate. So if there is trash on the floor, it’s only there for one day. Makes sense to me. Since you are in a studio, maybe once the trash is gone and the floor is clear, you can do a quick vacuum everyday? Time it, see how long it really takes. (A lot of us here think that tasks take much longer than they actually do).

Hi, Spencer! When I feel the way you are feeling - I try to do just three things. For example, grab a bag and throw away three pieces of trash. Doing just that little bit and feeling that tiny sense of accomplishment will often times keep me going to pick up three more things and then three more and then three more - before I know it, I have picked up the whole area I am working on. Music helps a lot, too. Getting lost in a song, I can accomplish quite a lot.

Hi Spencer; I hope you are doing well and that the ADHD meds are helping. Undiagnosed ADHD is a terrible thing to bear. You can't focus on anything. I am glad you finally found that out and got the help you need. the people here are full of good practical advice, non judgment, and understand because they have been there. Some of us still hoard, like myself. I always feel accepted here for at least making the effort. Let us know how things are going. I like your board name, rainontheground. (I'm a lover of rain.) Take care! CC

Hi Spencer. I totally understand where you are. My issue is more squalour than hoarding. Although, hoarding plays a big part, too. I'm surrounded by stuff, but also a huge amount of rubbish and dirt. And of course insects and other living creatures! I get fed up because I don't understand why I can't just throw away a wrapper/empty container rather than just put it aside to deal with some other time.
I'm so glad you have a diagnosis and medication. Hopefully you can now focus a little better on what you want to do. Don't beat yourself if things don't fall into place though. We're all here struggling with very similar issues and understand where you are. Lean on us!
