Snailspace, I have just been looking, because I`d never heard anything, either that you should, or shouldn`t change the water. According to a couple of different sites, changing the water isn`t needed unless you are moving the bed. We`ve emptied ours, I think, twice in the 12 or so years we`ve had it. Once for moving and last time to replace the mattress, about 3 years ago because we kept getting small leaks. We have the next step up from completely sloshy You ARE supposed to add "conditioner" every 6 months or so, to keep the water from smelling. We have some, but I don`t think we`ve added any since the initial filling. When ours was given to us, secondhand, I didn`t know anything about waterbeds (still don`t, really, except that I like to sleep in them) so I assumed they all needed heaters, like I was told ours does. I`m glad you found someone to take care of the mold, and you have a plan in mind to make this better for you!

You know, I rarely make the bed but I wash the sheets almost daily

Thanks for looking that up, Sleepymom! Now that you mention it, I do recall something about this 'conditioner' of which you speak! Pickles! If I can give you any moral support in the reclaiming of your bed consider it yours!

Because of dogs sleeping in the bed, I have drawsheets (a single sheet put lengthwise across the queen sized bed on top of the bottom sheet.) I change the drawsheet every day or two and change all the linen once a week.

I make the bed every morning. Just like the way it looks. Have a queen size mattress. A very pretty, old fashioned looking brown/gold/tan striped "duvet" cover is what I use for the bedspread. Two large pillows and three small pillows( one cute one with an embroidered butterfly design) go on top. It looks nice. Don't have headboard/footboard just mattress on the frame, makes it easier to change. Change sheets once a week. Sometimes I see a lump under the cover. My big cat sneeks under there sometimes, probably thinks I don't notice him.

I make the bed every few days, however I am thinking of just getting rid of the bed itself and get myself a Mayan hammock.

Oooooh. Have you tested out a Mayan hammock? They're wonderful for naps, but they're stretchy--and the more they stretch, the more your backside sags toward the floor. If you're not young, or your back isn't great, you're going to feel that.
Edited to add: OK, I looked around online and saw some Mayan hammocks that insist that they don't stretch--but they also say that they're all cotton. I've never slept on a cotton hammock that didn't stretch. YMMV.

I'm happy to say that while I was at the grocery store this morning the family member cleaned not only the mold off the corner of my mattress cover but brought a shop vac with a crevice tool and got all the debris out from way down between the frame and cover! So between that, the fact I washed all the linens (put the heaviest blanket in storage) and mopped the floors and cleared off the desk (again) things are much improved! I still have to wash the curtains and clean the windows/screens, (meant to do that this weekend but ran out of steam). I'm also working on a light (battingless) quilt to toss over the bed in future, so it will have one big cover instead of a bunch of little ones, and it will be light enough to move around, and wash. Being able to make this huge piece of furniture in the middle of the room look nice on a daily basis will make a world of difference on my outlook, I think. I've done so much work on this room in the past with decluttering, I want it to look as pretty as it deserves. I love the idea of a hammock! ! Personally, I don't think I could get in and out of such a thing, but it would sure solve the bed making issue!

I chose less often than once a month because that is when I completely launder & make the bed meticulously. Otherwise, the linens get pulled up semi-neatly by husband, & sometimes I do it too if he hasn't already. The guest room is another matter entirely, yikes! It is getting obsessively laundered & kept immaculate lately due to the revolving door of people coming & going to use it. Gotta always do this after one person leaves (grandson) & another person arrives (younger daughter) & it is getting ridiculous, . I was telling in Chat the other day that this weekend will be the SIXTH weekend in a row that the guest room has been occupied. Next weekend being the SEVENTH, as younger daughter is coming through on both of them WITH TWO FRIENDS IN TOW. Oh my, this run of seven has NEVER happened before; it was usually at least a month or so between occupancies, therefore it didn't make me so CRAZY, . But I love having all of the above people here, so it is definitely worth the effort. AND if I had not worked so hard to entirely reclaim that room, with so much help from wonderful SOS people, I would NOT be able to manage this new normal very well AT ALL. Sooooo happy have that job behind me! Back to my bed. I, too, have a waterbed, & it is definitely a different world of maintenance using one. I do have 2 sets of sheets & plenty of quilts & blankets to change out the linens without having to do it ALL in one day. However, that never happens because I always want my favorite blanket & quilt on there, & one of the sets of sheets has some polyester in it, therefore I refuse to sleep on them. Okay, thanks to this thread I now realize I need to put "New Cotton Waterbed Sheets" on my to-get list. But then I know they are really hard to find in the usual shops. Sigh. So I forget to get on the job & just continue with the inconvenient system. WHY do we do this? Also, we've only ever changed the water when installing a new mattress. This has occurred only once in 21 years - after springing a tiny leak, patching it, & then me getting paranoid about the leak, . Well, we did want a more waveless mattress at that time, so it was all good. I would imagine those mold issues would be helped with bleach, yes. My routine is to vacuum down the sides & as far into the bottom as possible. This requires me to sit on the bed & haul as much of the mattress away from the sides as I can. When husband helps, it goes easier, but it is usually just me wrestling with the whole thing, blech. And now that our almost 14 year-old dog can no longer make it up the stairs to sleep in the room with us, I find there is much less hair getting trapped all down the sides. She never slept in the bed except when she was a pup, so I have no idea how the hair got there through the years. Must have been blowing around in the air. End of saga. ps: That is UNTIL we start up again on the notion & discussion of getting a regular bed, a double this time, especially since it would give us more space - if we have a smaller bed AND lose the massive/deep headboard as well as the bulky frame. But what mattress will suffice after the luxury of 21 years on the cushy warm wonder of a waterbed? Seeeee the ongoing bed drama?

no. snailspace -- it doesn't sound like a lot of little excuses -- it sounds like exactly what you should do --
take apart the situation into single action thoughts -- to see where the glitch might lie.
I have this issue with getting the laundry done.
making the bed daily is a choice I made for myself when i was a teenager. or maybe early twenties? maybe it was just re-made then. i think I read about elizabeth taylor having to do it in rehab.
sounded like a vote for my own dignity to me. a good foundation.
but... my favorite above all is the image of dj grabbing all those lawyers by their corners -- and fluffing them til they all fall down. you go girl!!!

Clean sheets once or twice a week, depending on mood. Making the bed when I get up? Never. Takes a lot of energy for me, and I just don't have a lot to spare these days. But if I get hit with insomnia, it often helps to remake the bed from scratch, even down to Febreezing the mattress. The physical activity and yummy fresh bed just feels more comfy.
