Woo hoo! The one thing that I have been wanting to "fix" for five years, I have just accomplished! Since 2004 I have lived without air conditioning after my old unit bit the dust. Mind you, I live in the blazing heat of Florida. I couldn't sleep at night for the heat, and let's not even talk about the day! This week, after saving up a few thousand dollars, I paid a professional to install a very nice a/c (and heating) unit!!! My house is cool and comfortable. I am a single mom to four kids, and money is hard to come by. I have alot of issues in my home to fix still, but for right now, I am quite happy (and cool)!!!! Yay!

Reading this thread gave me the inspiration to get up and go outside and wash the kids' ketchup/barbeque sauce hand prints off the back door. It's the first thing you see at my door and I've been looking at it and "meaning to" for almost 2 weeks! cleaned the whole door with one of those microcloths! Thanks for this thread!

Speaking of smears, I can see a year-old spot of hair dye on the bathroom wall across the hall. Think I'll go wipe it off now. Good thing the tile doesn't stain! Great thread.

ONE THING?? Ooh, that's hard for me, because there is so much, and so much that is semi-urgent. Let me think...I could pick up the pile of clothes off the bathroom floor?

hey, hey!! I don't know who to hurrah first!! well -- razy -- I didn't WTG you on your first fingermark-door success. [and now -- a second one!!] So... and georgie -- woo-hoo! and lioness -- for getting that order done -- and missyang -- wow. really. I mean that from the bottom of my awe-struck over-heated little heart. I hope I do it too -- no more agonizing summers. and seeking peace -- red handprints gone. aww. and welcome all us other One Thing aspirers. Me -- I did do one thing. I took down the iviory raw silk curtain that is on the very far side of my window -- near the bathroom. i never pull it -- (there are sheers and a big velvet fabric thing to drape) -- and it's been there FOR YEARS. And I'd been noticing these watermarks. so... I took it down, hand washed it in the sink with oxi-clean and woolite. dried it by hanging it on a pole I placed high and horizontal over the sink -- when i took it down the hem was off in the middle -- and at the end -- but it had this band on it. so I figured maybe it had been one of those things you iron down...? but --- after all these years...? Today, i did it. Ironed the hem together-- no stitching -- and then ironed the whole thing. this is a professionally made curtain, not one of my makeshifts -- I hung it back up -- wow. it looks amazing. made sure the bottom could hang down, and not pool on the sill. wow. pretty.

ps yesterday's One Thing was the long silvery pillowcase I use as a case for the puffy quilt. It had been tossed out by a linens store -- and they had made slashes in it so someone like me would not come along and appropriate it...
yesterday i hand stitched all the slashes from the inside. then did the same on a sham cover i have. which then looked like it could use a washing. which I did in the sink.
all is back together -- even did a spot of ironing on the sham thing.

forgot to post an earlier One Thing --
the front hall shelf. which I put up myself, supposed to be sort of decorative -- I do have a little ceramic thing there with some dry plant life -- but it had accumulated everything else -- especially since I offed the little teeny dresser in the hall which was a catch-all.
so -- I was kinda hopeless about clearing it -- but it was a disruptive eyesore --
so -- this was in between the beginning of this thread and the last post sometime -- I did it!! did not totally clear it -- but sufficiently -- and parked the red & white mail basket up there, where I put the i don't know what to do with stuff.
it looks worlds better.
_________
I need to defrost the freezer. and clear out the refrigerator some more. and move the gray container.
will report back.

hopehope, what a great thread! good job on those curtains and clearing the shelf and all the rest. wtg the rest of you! i love this thread. i will: take down the opague dark blue felt over the north bedroom window that was keeping the bedroom warmer for winter. i'm sure it's a veritable mould pit. that would be step one. i can almost see a path to the window, so that is project enough for today. but IF i get real inspired and can figure out how to really get to the window, with all the furniture in front of it, i would clean the mould there. only thing is, i wake at 4 to 5 am, 'first light' thing and that dark curtain was helping. but it's time. before summer is over and i have to put it back up again! i did it! took down the thick dark felt, vacuumed the spider webs (probably hobo spiders!) and then scrubbed the mold, window tracks, and caulking (needs replacing) as best as i could with bleach water. lots of damage to the paint from years of neglect and hoarding. but today's project is DONE!

ps -- after saying on chat last night that in order to address the [umentionable -- shh] bugs I needed a handvac or something, so I could unlayer the bed -- I found a vacuum on the street -- an r2d2 type -- wheelie ball type thing -- with a killer pole -- and a metro card which conveniently had a transfer on it so I could shlep the thing home. it was too late to try last night -- but I did today and it runs -- whether that also means it works I'm not sure yet -- the killer pole thing is unwieldy and the whole thing is too big for my teenyweeny place. but I have no vacuumish thing these days and it may do for the nonce. I vacuumed this teeny hair of dust of web that was on my ceiling. One thing? okay -- I washed by hand the white neck pillow once I noticed the ick stainy marks on it. benefit of having a working drain at last. thank you, cg.

jeesh!! I had hurrahed you guys yesterday -- that's why the second post said "ps" --but i guess it didn't print. well -- sooper hurrah!!!!!gg -- after a year -- gosh -- and cc!! --- the mold and the caulking too -- woo-hoo!!! I wonder what else was in that post? anyway -- I was so excited at first to come out today to post here -- this thread is supporting and inspiring me -- but I got to the library to use the 15 minute computer and got caught up in private messages. ( at first I abbreviated that -- but it wound up saying pms -- -- a little off the point?) anyway -- now it's later, I mailed my check for membership to house of worship -- and found a fedex where I could copy the two rent-receipt letters along with checks -- but too late to go back to P.O. and get proof of mailing -- so -- it's all set up though, stapled and everything. also -- kinko's has these little card covers that are like instead-of-lamination that I just discovered. cool. so -- today the one thing was -- tada!! -- screwing these two hooks into the wood above the window by the bed/desk -- and changing the location of the new muslin curtain onto a long white rod between the hooks. the window is set in -- this curtain used to be jammed in on the curtain rod against the window -- now it hangs graciously from it's own rod on the outside of the window inset -- as it should. not used to this normalcy. aiee! did not check out the rod first -- turns out it's kinda long -- and doesn't collapse on itself to get shorter -- so it would probably be better really high up so it looks like the curtain covers the whole wall when it is closed. -- but that is not for now. I started to tote up my one things -- wrote down 17 -- then later more would occur to me. so cool. also -- as to previous One Things -- I did stash the gray container today --w hich also meant I could elicit two boxes which I tossed. and -- also -- tada!! -- I finally cleaned the black fan -- the big one -- which i committed to some while ago -- and also the littler one -- expect to be sneezing less.

I got the two black bags and the pair of boots to storage.
it took a long time, but I finally sussed out why I've been blocked about going there.
Not that it's helped all that much.
They were blocking passage from the hallway. getting them there is big. and good.
_____
yesterday i got the little hanging ceramic pot emptied of old potting soil, new stones in there, new potting soil on top -- hung back up.
____
Today I also unearthed the bag of now-moldy bagels from the gray container (obscured -- easy to forget) -- and got them thrown out.
