This is a great discussion. I'm bringing it up front again so others can see it.

CC---me too. I can't do a whole bad rom at once; I do some stuff there & then skip to another room. Admittedly, it takes a loooong time to see any one room really good looking, but I get cabin fever if I stay on one job for too long. Eventually, it will turn out the same, but, meanwhile there are no "great" rooms.

I never get a tax receipt. When I do, it ends up as more clutter in the floorboard of the car. Most stuff goes in the trash. If I don't get it out the door when I am in the mood to purge then it just wanders back in, unloads itself and re-assimilates itself within the house so I have to start over.
The voices I hear are always those of perfectionism. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing RIGHT! so I often don't "do" at all because I don't have time, or the inclination to do it perfectly.

In my honest to goodness really dumping now clean up home, I'm finding bags of clothing filled a few years ago to donate, and bags of paper clutter, ready to toss, in totes or hiding behind something else. These bags never made it downstairs. I'm not recycling, it is all going in the regular trash for now. Begone, clutter.

I returned to the board today and grinned from ear to ear to see that Hiding bumped it up. My extended family is having a massive rummage sale this weekend. Guess who didn't have much to contribute? I no longer keep stuff to sell.

That I have to clean things before I donate them. Wash/mend the clothes, dust the furniture, wipe down appliances. But hey, getting to itemize my donations on our tax return is what motivates me for my current purge, so I don't mind getting the receipts.

I'm also bumping this up. Tell your inner scold to pipe down! Break the rules!

Good thread for me. I will waste time on a daily cleaning task attempting perfection. I could use the time better by concentrating on dejunking.
I also am learning to toss "good" stuff. I have participated in estate sale cleanups and was astonished at how much went into a dumpster without a second thought. The place was cleaned and ready for sale or inheritance in a minimal amount of time. Now I toss. If I don't throw stuff out then upon my demise a someone else will. I now minimize the tme I take to rehome or donate. My age of 77 probably contributes to my current attitude.

Just because my mother (and grandmother and aunt and great aunt) were the caretakers of the family "memorabilia" - I don't have to. If I don't like it, don't need it, can't use it - I don't have to keep it. If it is "too good" for me to use - it is "too good" for me to keep. If it is "too bad" for me to use it is "too bad" for me to keep. I also don't have to keep pictures of people I don't know (or don't keep in touch with or don't like)! And, I absolutely don't have to keep any pictures that 1) don't have people or pets in them or 2) that aren't decent quality. I don't have to keep every card and letter I received and my mother received or my grandmother received until time ends. I also don't have to keep clothes or cosmetics or kitchen items that are "a little bit off" - that never get used because something just doesn't work "right" for ME. I also don't have to finish every book I start - I can stop if I don't like it. I also don't have to keep my "stuff" the same way other people do - I can use what I want, where I want and how I want. missjean . THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

missjean I am now giving myself permission to dump the stained old clothes I save for the outside work. phoenixcat I have 10 boxes of pictures to sort and I bet I don't know half of people in them. I am giving myself permission to toss them. creativechaos Every one of the the rules you challenge has been an obstacle to my dejunking. Thanks for the reminder. This thread continues to be helpful for me. Thank you all.

Great thread - some of the old names brought back some memories I can throw away bottles of stuff without using up every last drop in the bottle

I can't really claim donations anymore thanks to the new tax laws. It is easier to donate without waiting for a receipt. And I can drop and go, no one is scrutinizing my donation....

I love that tax law change I used to try and keep track of all my donations and then use a program to estimate value I love just dropping things off now.
