so many have talked of levels of squalor and I am not knowledgable of how to determine them? what would be the levels as someone could define that simply?
I hear levels and know what is implyed by moving the numbers from one to four but what constitutes level one level two level three and lastly level four?
I have no idea what level I am living in.....want to know...perhaps do not want to know just as much as I want to know......hugs bigtimetroubles

I'm sure that someone will post the link to the squalor survivors definition of levels of squalor soon, but I can't do that with my little phone. I'll try my best to describe them, anyway: Level 1 = clutter on surfaces Level 2 = clutter impeding access Level 3 = clutter impeding access + animal waste Level 4 = clutter impeding access + human waste If you have animal waste, but clean it up as soon as you notice it, that doesn't count. At least, that's what my pets keep telling me.

Level 3 = clutter impeding access + animal waste Level 4 = clutter impeding access + human waste one tiny correction: this should read " regular occurrence of animal waste and/or rotting food"One accident from Fido/Fluffy and/or one forgotten iccky banana doesn't count. It's the recurring problem that is significant here. thanks for the links

I wish I'd seen those links a few months ago. I went to a psychologist (for other reasons) and, as they do, he asked me for a list of things I want to change. I said that I wanted a cleaner house. He said, why not focus on the important things? I said, My house is really messy. He still didn't seem to get it... I just don't think he understood what I meant when I said "but... it's really filthy!". So I ended up dropping the subject. I don't think I was up to showing him photos at that point, the list of "problems" so clinically laid out there would have helped me explaining greatly.

Thanks for clarifying about the criteria for the different levels.
I have 5 dogs and 3 cats. Some of them are old and chronically ill; some some are merely poorly housetrained. I clean up after my pets on an average of twice a day. Finally sewed some washable pee pads, which has eased my burden tremendously. If I could only teach the dogs to run the washing machine....

As far as the psychologist goes, I don't know that many of them are familiar with hoarding/squalor issues. He might not understand, even with pictures, why you have such trouble cleaning:( SG

and remember that squalor can be outside in your yard if the doggie deposits remain there and if he runs loose from the yard he is leaving squalor in the neighborhood- we put up a front fence just to stop other dogs from pooping in our front yard- Dogman has his own fenced in pee patch which I keep clean 3 or 4 times a week- I do not want my neighbors having to smell my yard-it is a little harder to catch all in the winter as snow tends to hide it- I think too that we can have different levels of squalor from room to room - and sometimes it just becomes part of the landscape- or hidden from eye site. I remember when I was working at a group home where the ladies cleaned their rooms etc- and a social worker came in and mentioned that the house was clean in the middle of the rooms but the corners were dirty- she meant things like under the bed and closets and behind the couch so to speak- the key words are safe and healthy - first and then we can go from there-. We can have a clean kitchen but a squalor fridge.

well I have had some time to be thinkin about squalor and maybe I might be level two....if you count the mouse feces I keep finding in drawers and stuff in the kitchen....of course my dog deposits his stuff outside and I just let it remain there while cutting grass over it all ways run thru it with the mower or me feets..... but then inside does not really have impeded ability to move except one room which has got a rifle case laying on the floor and that room is sort of step here and there to get to the chair.....it is the smallest room in house 2nd bedroom/computer room/office no bed in there though....it has a large desk and a gun safe and a stereo on top of table and two file cabinets.....speakers are in there too....that is the most cluttered room in house right now.....everything in the file cabinet is disorganized as well....the other file cabinet is full of pictures and shotgun shell boxes.... there is a computer in there too...basically this room does not get used much...oh TV there with the digital converter box while two others in house have directv hooked up..... but does mouse feces count for squalor as animal waste? I would think it does....and it is continuing unless I keep killing baits out for the mice to take and eat.....then I never know where they die or where the stuff goes for that matter for it leaves my drawer and I have put out plenty of this bait poison.....just never know how many mice are around here....found one in closet month or two ago....was searching for something and he scurried out of there across kitchen floor and into garage...... It sucks to have mice...it is more common in winter to have them inside.....but where they live I have no idea.....

Oh bigtimetroubles, you may know this but just in case you don't, watch your dog!!! If your dog eats a mouse that has eaten the bait, your dog will become poisoned too. It is a very painful death for a dog ... probably the mouse too. When I had mice in here 5 yars ago ... ironically when the place was immaculate ... I used glue traps. They work amazingly well but the drawback is they don't die, you have to throw them out alive. You can get them at Ace Hdwe and they are cheap You need to find out where they are coming in at and block the entrance. Easier said then done, I know.

BTT, it sounds like you may be a high Level 1 like me for the most part, with forays into Level 3 because of the mouse droppings. Any food waste or animal waste that stays in place for more than a day or so is fair game. Level 1 would mean that you've got significant piles everywhere, but you haven't blocked off any important doors or access points. Have you ever lost access to a living space that other people would normally use a lot? Your bed (I used to be able to sleep on mine, but half was always covered in clutter), your desk, your kitchen or dining room table, etc... That might indicate the beginnings of Level 2. Then again, the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 has always seemed kind of subjective to me. I suppose it all depends on your perception. Best of luck! ~Mouse
