It is amazing to me that the artist was able to convince his mother that her belongings had value beyond her own personal hoarding.
This exhibit awakens awareness about the incredibly difficult times of the Cultural Revolution which is easily glossed over by Americans.

Thanks Platypus for posting this...wish I was back in N.Y. to see this. My curiosity is in why the collection of empty Colgate toothpastes, are they really emptied completely, when did she start using it and why, was she not able to get another U.S. brand like Crest, etc.? As a former dancer who has choreographed dance...when the audience leaves you know you have achieved success in your art not only when there is a strong reaction...such as I hate it or I love it but when a curiosity is evoked. It's the indifference that makes it not an art...if only for that person. Hmmmmm...I like that yarn...could use some in my collection. Unfortunately, my stuff laid out would probably take up the majority of the Modern Museum of Art...I pack well...lots and lots of boxes...
