One of my friends at the Bible study is undergoing surgery this week for her colitis -- a colostomy. She has a 50/50 chance that they can make a pouch out of the end of her small intestine and sew that to her rectal area later. I wanted to update you on my friend....she had surgery yesterday. She had a foot of her colon removed and then they resectioned it -- no ostomy bag!!! The surgeon said she did "amazingly well" and instead of going into ICU, they put her in a regular room and instead of 10 days, her hospital stay will be a week! This gives me hope that my situation, which isn't that drastic, can be taken care of without steroids and without surgery.

I'm sorry to hear about your condition. It sounds a lot like mine, actually. I got very sick a couple weeks ago. I was staying sleepy, having the chills, headache, BAD cramping, bloody diarrhea, vomiting. It was bad. The cramps and frequent, bloody diarrhea sounds a bit like your problem. I took Cipro and it went away. I still have diarrhea, not liquid now, and not bloody. I got it right after cleaning a bad mess on the floor, where my cat (he was very sick) had went all over the place, and am wondering if it could have been from that?
Anyway, though... Hope you are feeling better!

If you were having bloody diarrhea, cramping, chills, vomiting, and all that, it might have been an E. coli infection. Might be good to see a doctor about that, especially if the symptoms haven't all gone away yet, it can be serious. Pets can be a source of this so it's advisable to always wash hands well after touching pets or their messes.

My dietitian friend said to go without any dairy for 3 days to see if that would make a difference. The time is up and my condition hasn't changed at all, so I'm slowly introducing yogurt back into my diet. I'm seeing the doctor on Tuesday for an assessment of what's going on (colitis flareup, obviously) and get a referral to see my gastroenterologist. He'll want to do a colonoscopy to see what's going on (my last one was 2 years ago). So that's where things stand right now. I'm hoping and praying this flareup is something that can be taken care of with the proper meds (NO steroids) and time.
After taking the 4th of July off, it's back to work on the living room. I can't believe I'm almost finished with it! Then it's on to my "Bedroom Of Doom". At least I can close the door if someone comes over! The bathroom needs to be tidied again (sometimes I don't make it in time, if you know what I mean!) but at the moment it's presentable. I clean up after my accidents immediately and at the end of the day do a final tidy up. I'm trying really hard to stay on top of things! You guys help me out a LOT!!

Rennie Ellen -- My fingers are crossed that your primary doc, along with your gastroenterologist, will be able to find a drug cocktail (with no steroids!) which will help you get back into a good, solid remission from the colitis. Wish I could give UC a swift kick in the keister for you, but I'll offer you a virtual hug and a "Keep going! You rock!" instead.
