Ugly smelling poops usually indicate giardia infection in puppies. Is it the same in cats?

Frontline PLus and Advantage work as well as Revolution for fleas for most pets, although occasionally someone will report (at the shelter) that they prefer one or the other. The main difference with Revolution is that it also treats ear mites and intestinal parasites. Vets want you to think you have to get it from them, but there are many online sources, and around here, most feed stores even carry them. The shelter I volunteer at gets ours from 800petmeds.com. In addition, you can save a LOT of money if you buy the largest sized doses and dose them out yourself using a kit like this. This is what we do at the shelter, and we sell our doses for a profit while still saving folks money. You buy the kit once and then just keep ordering the largest size of the products. See these links for the kits I referred to: cgi.ebay.com/ADVANTAGE-FLEA-CONTROL-KIT-FOR-DOGS-AND-CATS-10-DOSES_W0QQitemZ230396477511QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a4b34047cgi.ebay.com/FRONTLINE-PLUS-FLEA-CONTROL-KIT-FOR-CATS-AND-DOGS_W0QQitemZ250484935368QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a5210cac8I can even send you the dosing information we use at the shelter if you put a kit together yourself. We buy the largest dog size vials for each of the three brands (Advantage, Frontline Plus and Revolution) and dose it down. ****This does NOT WORK FOR OTHER BRANDS, ESPECIALLY HARTZ OR OTHER "grocery store" type products. Some products for dogs can be TOXIC to cats, so never try this other than with Advantage, Revolution, and Frontline Plus!!!***** If you have any specific questions about this, feel free to pm me. Fr cntrolling fleas in yoru house, try googling "borax" and "flea control." I used it years ago when we had an indoor-outdoor dog, and it worked great. i THINK THE BRAND WAS "fEA sTOPPERS" OR "fLEA bUSTERS."

Hello everybody,
Thanks SO MUCH for all of these great ideas!! I had no idea there were so many possible approaches to these problems, and I really appreciate all of your thoughtful and information-filled posts!
I wanted to tell you that I was able to get the Revolution I wanted by going to Petshed.com as recommended by our new member, HarleyQuinn. Evidently Petshed is able to sell it without a prescription because they ship it from Australia, where a prescription is not required. And the price they sold it at was fantastic, too! Obviously it will take a bit longer to get here, and in the meantime I plan to try a lot of the other ideas you all posted.
As for the house, I would LIKE to take Lioness's advice and bomb the place, but the sad truth is that I can't stay awake for five hours at this point in time due to my narcolepsy. So instead I'm going to use copious quantities of the RAID spray, probably wearing a mask, because I plan to cover every area I possibly can.
It was also interesting to hear that other folks have had animals with particularly odoriferous poops, and here again, I'm going to work down the list of advice you all gave and see if I can make the house smell a little less offensive!
Many thanks to all who posted, Wendy

I had a flea problem this summer, this is how I took care of it. I did not want to do bombs because I have gas heating and stove and bombs require you have the gas company come turn you gas off and your pilots can 't be on. Because of the state of the house, I did not want the service people in the house.
I got biospot topical and an oral pill called Program, it does not require a prescription. You can get them at Drsfosterandsmith.com or google it and see if you can find it somewhere else. I also got carpet powder for the couches and carpets, and spray as well for the furniture.
I treated the animals first, then I washed all the linens in hot water. I used the powder on the carpets as directed and vacuumed (If you have a vacuum with a bag, a trick is to put a flea collar in the bag of the vacuum cleaner). I have a bagless, so I emptied regularly outside of the house into a trash bag. I threw out the cat and dog beds, they were old anyway and coming apart at the seams, and I could not think of a way to clean them without them falling apart. Once I vacuumed I sprayed the spray on the carpets and couches and let it dry.
I did this vacuum/spray routine every other day for 3 weeks and finally saw an improvement. I marked on the calendar when to give the pills to the animals, they are once a month. I use the topical every 3 weeks. I have not had a flea problem for a few months , but I just saw a flea yesterday, and decided I needed to powder and vacuum the carpets again before there is a huge problem.

I am really glad for all the flea control information because I have been a bit frustrated that Advantage doesn't seem to be working as well as it did when I first started using it several years ago. Wendy, I don't know if this will work for you or not for litterbox duty, but I bought one of those plastic containers used for putting pet food in - the kind with the spring-hinged lid they sell at Wal-Mart in the pet department. I line it with 2 tall kitchen trash bags and it sits right next to the litterbox. The container honestly keeps all the smells in. And not having to wander finding stuff to do the litterbox and then having to go outside to get rid of the smell every time makes it easy to stay on top of it. Something I have found is that Friskies catfood - canned and dry - produces extra smelly poop from my cats, even though they love it. I read on the internet a long time ago that this is due to imcomplete digestion. So, maybe, a change of food will help, also. Good luck!

I had my dog on Frontline, but the fleas have developed an immunity to it. Another member here, PonyGirl, suggested Comfortis, so I tried that, and it worked much better (not sure whether you can use Comfortis with cats though).
