Wtg on getting your problem finally sorted.
I'm sorry you've been weighted down by thinking it was of your doing and glad that it's been confirmed to be nothing to do with your usage.
I hope this will bring some comfort to others who have experienced similar thoughts and encourage them to keep fighting for definite proof as to why things keep happening in their homes.

Oh thank goodness that problem has been resolved. I had something very very similar years ago. From the time we moved in I noticed that our sewer backed up a lot -- it was so irritating. My MIL kept telling me it was because I flushed toilet paper.  what the devil do most people do? We went along with the trouble until she and my FIL finally moved out for good and then it started getting worse. My husband called trying to get plumbers but it was going to cost thousands to dig in our back yard so bless him = he dug until he finally found the problem. His dad years ago had done a "do it yourself" plumbing job to connect a toilet in the garage and they literally gouged a hole in the side of the sewer line and pushed the pipe from the garage toilet into the main sewer line. It was jagged and toilet paper and stuff would get stuck plus finally the pipes shifted enough that we were really in a mess. Other plumbers had told us the thing about roots and grease and all that jazz just like you mentioned. Since DH dug the trench and uncovered the mess -- the actual plumbing bill was under $200 to have the company come and repair the line. After that not once did we have any further problems. My FIL nor MIL ever mentioned the "do it yourself" job they'd done on the sewer lines. I do the same thing you talked about -- I'm very sensitive and I almost always seem to blame myself. I think things are my fault. I have had a lot of help with that over the years = my husband and his family use blame on everything first. Rather than find the real cause of things the first thing is to say --- if you hadn't done this and that and thus it wouldn't be happening. I'm just glad my DH is now a little bit more into investigating things before laying the verdict down. Sorry for the long tangent on your thread. I just know how this kind of situation feels. We had to deal with it fewer years than you did though == it was a mere 10 years of dealing with our plumbing backups. And smelling the toilet paper -- we could never figure out why my MIL refused to flush TP and she would put it in the waste basket -- it drove me nuts and nothing I said to her would get her to flush. I guess she had been dealing with the backups before we moved back in for more like 26 years. |

I have my own sewer problems and had the city come and use a video camera in the pipe....they decided to dig up a section of my yard and fix the pipe but the problem is still there with getting roots in the pipe....but glad Script for you and your sanity about how this problem should be handled....the squeeky wheel gets the greese.......hugs btt
appears you were squeeky enough to get the crew to come dig.....

So happy for you and the relief you finally have after all the years of fighting this problem. There is nothing worse than sewer problems......well, I guess there could be  , but dang it! I hate sewer issues, too! I actually feel guilty every time I have to call the landlord to root our line (even though it is obvious that the huge crepe myrtles planted alongside the outgoing pipe just "might" be a problem)!! Script and Chris, I can really relate to the feeling that everything is always my fault, even when it's a situation I had nothing to do with or which was completely beyond my control. I have frequent flier miles when it comes to guilt trips, but seriously, who would want to redeem those? I'm so glad both of your situations were finally resolved and both of you were able to feel better. (And Chris, I hesitate to ask, but what on earth does your MIL do with her toilet paper if she doesn't flush it? On second thought, it's probably best not to know. . .) |

WOW! Congratulations for sticking with it and getting the sewer problems fixed! We had our bedroom/bath remodeled some years ago, and had some minor problems, such as the bathroom fan continually running. I mentioned it to the architect and contractor and they assured me that it was just the wind blowing (!) and there was nothing wrong with it. A year or so later, we had an electrician in. He discovered that the fan was wired incorrectly and it was indeed RUNNING ALL THE TIME! It can be really crazy-making when you know something is not right and no one believes you (even my husband didn't believe me!). I'm proud of you both for standing up to what everyone else said and getting your sewer problems fixed!  |

Ah yes, I have heard those "reasons why you are getting sewage in the house" excuses too. Even the birch tree one. I have five surrounding my house. And yes yes yes, it turns out to have been the city tree that is inches away from the sidewalk that was wreaking havoc on my pipes. I knew it, I said it, they didn't believe it. Now they have dug and repaired many meters worth of mess and sidewalk and driveway and road and root damage. The only unfortunate thing is that they won't repair the meters immediately BY my house, so if the lovely but gigantic oak tree decides to send spies afoot... She will surely find that exposed part of old clay piping. I can only hope. But for now... all is dry. I had forgotten about the smell. Not generally sewage, but just... "off"... not fresh... dirty waterish. For someone who is sensitive to yucky smells, it was a daily issue of walking around and taking sniffs, to make sure it wasn't noticeable. Lots of scented candles. I can totally understand and rejoice with you.  |

They work in the construction trade, they are Mafia etc. So to read someone use the term you used...I have to say I found it offensive. I'm not demanding you abandon the term if you find it amusing, I'm not saying you should abandon the use of the word if you are trying to reclaim it... I'm simply saying that there are people in this society, and on these boards, who find that term offensive and inappropriate. Do what you will with my opinion on the matter  |
