Script I hope you change your mind. I would miss you and your duck more than I can say. I, too, am sick to death of political correctness, whether it's here or anywhere else. And I know I'm not alone in this--other board members have shared similiar thoughts and feelings with me as well. In my opinion, there was nothing wrong with your post. I know that's only my opinion, but I'm putting it out there because I want you to know that you're not alone in how you feel. I know at this point that it's all I can do. You've worked so hard on this board and I for one want you to know how much that work has mattered (and still matters) and is appreciated. With much love The Disorganized Dragon

Tell you what newbies: When you've contributed 1/100th of 1% of what Script has given this community, then you can feel free to challenge her word choice. Okay?

Script, for one - your "stuff" doesn't bother me. Your use of a word that is often used as a slur did. If being "politically correct" means we don't use words that have a negative history, that cause people to be uncomfortable - call me politically correct any day of the week.
For another, the word had (to use your language) - F*CK ALL to do with your sewers. You could have conveyed your pleasure and excitement without resorting to that word. Your story would have made sense without that word. Your story didn't hang on that word.
Also, I FIND THAT WORD OFFENSIVE. It has been used against me many, many times. I'm sure I'm not the only one. If you would like to be a child and take your toys home and you won't play with the rest of us because you got called on an offensive word...well...I don't have any words for that.
You could have explained yourself, apologised for using a word that offends some - you chose not to. Which is very sad. You demand sensitivity yet you won't extend any to me? Hypocrisy is a beautiful thing, ain't it?
To those who would think I don't have a right to an opinion because I don't have Script's posting history...that's just nuts. So if I make 2000 posts I can write whatever I'd like and not have to answer for it? Your logic is totally bananas.

- The title of this thread "Demand Sensitivity" does not refer to Script demanding that people be sensitive. Script was referring to a term in psychology called "Demand Sensitivity". It is explained on this thread here, about "demand sensitivity" and "demand resistance". takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=402If you read that post, you'll understand the context of this thread better. (edit to clarify ... a feeling "sensitive" to the demands of city hall that she was wrong ... and feeling susceptible to hearing that she was wrong for how she used her own plumbing. She fought against that sensitivity to believe in City Hall questioning her judgment. And stuck to her guns. And won.) Script has been with us since 2004. Five years. We had another forum that closed because its owner retired from forum moderating, to do other things with her life. We all moved to this forum which was created for us. New ownership, but it's largely a continuation of the prior forum. Script has made 5 years worth of posts. We've followed her recovery. Most of us are familiar with how she speaks about herself. You were simply missing the context. -

In all fairness,
I didn't know that "eye-talian" was considered an ethnic slur.
I thought it was just an unusual spelling.
I have Italian relatives who have never mentioned it.
I honestly plead ignorance here.

I am the grandchild of Italian immigrant grandparents. our family members have proudly referred to ourselves as "Eye-ties" for generations. No one I know, Italian or otherwise, has ever considered it a slur.

One more Italian here who knows that Script has spoken proudly of her husband's Italian heritage and the stereotyping they have faced in a previously undiverse neighborhood.
Sorry, Morethanyouneed, but if you knew Script, you would know her heart, and you would know that she is one of the kindest, fairest individuals on this board or anywhere else.

moggyfan, "eye-tie" is also considered a slur in some areas/countries. While it may be used amongst your family without harm, you may wish refrain from using it in public (Especially in the UK, if it matters)

I feel the need to add my 2 cents. When I read Script's post with the in quotes eyetalians and other ethnics, I too was taken aback. I am from the northeast and the term eyetie and dago and wop are all used and are all offensive. I felt like in some way the quotation marks were used as she realized the word might bother someone. I have been here for over a year and a half and personally have read all Script's post and didn't know she was Italian. I knew she liked good food and pastries and wine, but not her ethnicity. Therefore to say someone shouldn't take offense with a term that in many areas is treated like the "n" word, just because she doesn't know the person is an Italian and poking fun is ridiculous. Script has done many good things for this board. She also made an insensitive remark and should graciously apologize for any offense that was taken. Her followup tirade was truly sad and unacceptable to me. I will continue to visit this board as it is very helpful to me in my attempts to get out of clutter and squalor. I don't feel the original comment by morethan youneed was an insult. It was phrased quite neutrally and I looked forward to an explanation for use of those demeaning terms. Who are "other ethnics"? That sentence wasn't necessary to the post and the violent reactions of old time members have kind of put me off a little. As I said in a year and a half I don't know or care what anyone's race, religion, or ethnicity is . We are here for a purpose to change our way of living and taking care of ourselves, families and belongings. I'm not here to be best buddies, although I care very much about the members of this board. There, that's more than 2 cents worth but I needed to get my feelilngs out too. I hope they both stay and can benefit from the board and the help it gives us all.

Congratulations on getting to the crux of the plumbing problem without spending your last cent in unneeded repairs, Script. It can be very frustrating when people give canned answers without really checking to see what might be wrong. Hurray!

I think there has been an overreaction on the part of both sides, so I'm locking the thread to prevent further flames. I urge Script and Morethanyouneed to realize that neither of you meant to demean or insult the other -- until you forgot to give each other the benefit of the doubt.
Can you do that for us, please?
Script, I'm sending you a private message. Please give it a read, okay?
