I'm new here. I just joined today. I have kind of a love-hate relationship with housecleaning -- sometimes my house is beautiful and very clean and I love it when it's like that but I also resent spending so much time on it. Other times I get tired of doing it and things backslide into total and complete chaos. That's where I am now. I feel embarrassed that I can't handle something as simple as keeping a house clean. I'm 31 years old and I live with my partner of 5 years. We have an old two-story house that we share with a dog and a cat. I'm about to start a cleaning session of untold magnitude because things are so disgusting and I can't take it anymore. I look forward to poking around the forums and getting to know people. Cheers, Spooky

Welcome, Spooky! You will find that a lot of people here are trying to find a happy medium between crisis cleaning and total chaos. It's that tricky "maintenance" thing. I like the ETE saying that some of us S.O.S. sibs use, i.e. Erase The Evidence. Look back at a room before you leave it and then ETE that you have been there. (I am a great one for leaving dishes, newspapers, shoes, etc. thrown about if I don't watch myself.) So, glad to see you here. We'll have some fun!

Thanks! That is exactly what I need help with. One of the few things that stuck with me from flylady was her method of crisis cleaning -- 15 min in a room x3, rest for 15, repeat. I'm doing that now. I'm always amazed at how much of a difference 15 minutes can make. When I'm done I'm going to look through my latest bed bath & beyond flier and try to come up with a yarn storage solution. It's threatening to take over my house!

Welcome, lets share a virtual coffee. Who said keeping a house clean is simple? Remember that movie (Mr MOM?) where the Dad had to stay home while the wife worked, and he said it was easy, just follow the schedule? I remember the scene where he ended up toasting the kid's sandwich with the iron, coz he was engrossed in the soaps on tv, and the house was chaos. Two storeys, dog, cat, two people? I can see how your house can get out of hand and the molehill turn into a mountain. I am sure you can get some help with us, we are all climbing those mountains together. Can I ask, Does MD stand for a state in the USA? (I am in Australia, so I am not familiar with them.)

Welcome Spooky!
Did you get one of flylady's magic timers? I also find the 15 minutes to be do-able. What also works for me is a list of what I need to do every day, broken down into small steps, then posting in the working-in-threes thread on Listzilla. I often go by number of items - skin and toss 10 junk mails.

Welcome, Spooky! Is hired help a possibility for you? Wouldn't it be just lovely, after you dig out, to have someone in once or twice a month to do a once over, and help keep you accountable? I know it seems expensive, but it is so worth it if you can possibly budget for it!
But I do know that the skills you will learn here will help with maintenance. So will the support. Welcome to SooS!
