Summer school is over, so yesterday I started a big painting project and turned large areas of my previously 0 - .5 apartment into a solid 2. There is painting crap all over.
I had to go into work for a bit this morning and now that I'm home I just can't get myself moving again. If I work at it, this is probably a two-day job, but right now I am sitting at the computer, drinking coffee and procrastinating. The poor kitty is freaked out that all the furniture's shoved around (actually, that part is kind of funny), and I am appalled at the mess I've made.
Yikes.

Yeah, but you're painting....I don't know how you paint a room without making a mess!!! So maybe you should just do a little bit of the painting. Like in a corner or maybe around any doorway, or window, that kind of thing. Don't have to do it all, just a little bit of it. It's cool that you're painting though!!!

Dear moggyfan,
The hardest part of the job is where it ceases to be fun planning and turns into actual work.
As heylady said, just do a little. Then do a little more. If you are doing something, you are doing enough.

Okay, I worked for about an hour or so. Did the front door & a little more.
I am only painting the entry area and a long hallway--not so bad really. BUT! I live in a 100+ year old building, and the amount and variety of wainscoting, crown molding, door-frame gee-gaws, and other random "gingerbread" seems infinite--there's hardly any plain old wall, so mostly impossible to use a roller except on the ceiling. Also, I was hoping to be able to paint most of it without priming it. . . but, alas, Not.
I've been paying my godson to paint most of the other rooms, but, I thought, surely I could manage this much, since I have some time off before school starts up, but now I am sorry :-(
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. Off to do a little more :-)

Hi Moggyfan - you ARE managing "this much!" Painting an old house is not easy. But think how pretty all that gee gaw stuff will be when you're done.
You did a chunk today. You can do a chunk tomorrow. So what if it takes you 4 days instead of 2? There's no Olympic medal for fast painting! (I don't even think it's an exhibition sport, hee hee)
Keep up the good work! (Out of curiosity, what color are you painting?)

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the pom-pom girls :-) You're the best. And I have made some progress!
Neveropentheclosets, Yeah, you're right. There's not going to be a prize for doing it fast (except for the intrinsic reward of being done!) And yes, I have to think down the road and imagine how great it will look (I know the rooms my godson painted look a bajillion times better than they did before). It does have to be done before Saturday though, since I am having people over for dinner (and I want the positive reinforcement of the "Ooohs and aaahs"! Yes, I'm shallow :-)
Walls & ceiling: White All the wood trim (which is probably 65% of the entry area and hall): A medium cream color Crown molding: A nice sand color left over from the living room
Onward!

Cheering you on
AND envious that
1) you have enough space to even contemplate painting! and
2) that you live in an apartment or house with character. Ahh, Moggyfan, I'm getting homesick for the City by the Bay.
Good luck with the dinner party!

I''m jealous too. I lived in San Francisco for a few years before moving abroad I'll find my way back. Dear moggyfan, The hardest part of the job is where it ceases to be fun planning and turns into actual work. As heylady said, just do a little. Then do a little more. If you are doing something, you are doing enough. messymimi I think everyone has got it right. Let go of the "two day" thing you've got in your head. You're doing something. Plus, it sounds like you're doing it by yourself. Be happy you're doing it at all and take it a little at a time. You'll get done. Don't forget to give yourself a pat on the back for getting up and painting! Thats great.

Hi guys,
Y'all inspired me and I worked for quite awhile this evening. Progress is being made!
(Note: When I moved the furniture and really looked at the state of my ceiling and walls with all their nooks and crannies, it was pretty horrifying how filthy and furry and cobwebby they all were!)
Still, things are moving along, and I think with a couple hours' work in the morning, the entry way will be finished, which means some of the furniture can be moved back where it belongs which will really help with the messy out-of-control feeling of the place right now.
Westsidestory and Packusratus, You may leave San Francisco, but San Francisco will never leave you :-)

Soooooo true. I am about 3/4 done now, and I am not having any fun at all.
But still, it's looking pretty good. So there's that.
