"If you keep a thing seven years, you are bound to find a use for it." -- Sir Walter ScottObviously, Sir Walter never saw some of the things I've kept for seven years . . .

this reminds me of my personal philosophy about hair -- you know, if you keep the same hairstyle for twenty-five years, it's sure to come back in fashion.

"I would imagine that the inside of a bottle of cleaning fluid is, well, f***ing clean." -- Mitch Hedberg--------------------------------------------- Hope, I certainly know that philosophy worked for my grandmother . . . (and yes, BTT, one of my best friends would agree with you wholeheartedly) MM, I'm with you--I'll take all the cleaning help I can get. ------------------------------------------- Since May is National Mental Health Month, starting tomorrow night this thread will change to "Quotes for Mental Maintenance" (unless I can think up a better title between now and tomorrow at midnight ).

"Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” -- UnknownSince the month of May is National Mental Health Month, I thought I would concentrate on posting quotes that might give someone the additional encouragement they need to begin conquering their clutter, whether it's getting started that day or getting started for the very first time. And remember . . . "H*ll! There ain't no rules around here! We're trying to accomplish somep'n." -- Thomas Alva Edisonand, of course . . . "People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.” -- Zig Zigler

Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

"The only thing that ever sat its way to success was a hen." -- Sarah Brown--------------------------------------------- Awesome quote, Hope! Does anyone else have a hard time just getting started?

Yes; I have a hard time getting started. Part of the reason is because I'm so darned physically tired to begin with --- by the time I scrape a few minutes together to de-clutter. And, partly because I'm avoiding it altogether and would rather be doing things that give me joy.
"How soon 'not now' becomes 'never'.' Martin Luther 1483-1546
"Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts." Winston Churchill 1874-1965

"One half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it." -- Sidney HowardI know what I have to give up, but the problem is that I don't want to. (I might need it later or I might not be able to find another one or I might really lose that weight and then it would fit or . . .) ------------------------------------------------- Ponygirl, you hit the nail right on the head! I can think of 842 things I'd rather do than deal with my domestic chaos. Of course, my apartment is now the perfect example of what happens when you continually choose those things over dealing with the clutter. And thanks for the great quotes! (Gotta love that Churchill. )

Mine too, Dragon...especially since I've been continually going that route for decades! (Guess the "repair" won't happen overnight, either!)
For those of us who relish doing the joyous things:

"Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending." -- Author Unknown----------------------------------------------------- PG, if you find a way to repair years of domestic neglect overnight, you better let all of us know! (Then we can sell it to the rest of the world for the one-time low price of $99.95. )

when annie lamott's brother was looking hopelessly at a sea of research materials for his report on "Birds of North America," and said to his father, "How am I ever going to get this done?" his father said to him, "Bird by bird, buddy. bird by bird."
I should take that one to heart, myself.
and, my personal favorite, "That was then. This is now."
AND, something I heard a fellow say to someone else in a gym when i was waiting for the weight machine, "You can't win today's game with yesterday's score."

"Life's problems wouldn't be called 'hurdles' if there wasn't a way to get over them." -- Author Unknown Thanks to MiSC for today's quote!------------------------------------------------------- MM, your quote is so true. Now the question is what happens if you start thinking negatively about positive thinking? Hope, love your quotes, especially the one about 'Then vs. Now.' Since my clutter can't time travel (yet), the past doesn't seem as messy as the present.
