"So many of us define ourselves by what we have, what we wear, what kind of house we live in, and what kind of car we drive...If you think of yourself as the woman in the Cartier watch and the Hermes scarf, a house fire will destroy not only your possessions but your self."--Linda Henley
“How good something is should never be determined by its cost, designer, origin, or its perceived value by others.”--Ashly Lorenzana
"Any so-called material thing that you want is merely a symbol: you want it not for itself, but because it will content your spirit for the moment."--Mark Twain
"Men are not great or small because of their material possessions. They are great or small because of what they are."--J.C. Penney
"Ask me not what I have, but what I am."--Heinrich Heine Mimi, I just thought you used the Pilkington quote because it was the best one to illustrate how Sweetie had trained the Mini-Sweeties to rescue treasures lost in the trash. (I can barely keep up with all the quotes I've used, so I certainly don't expect anyone else to do it.) I do love that quote--it was one of the few funny ones I found for this month. (Lots of funny stuff on cleaning, but clutter, not so much.) And thanks for the new one--it's so very true. How much of the stuff in our homes goes from "I have to have this" to "Why is this here?" Di! So glad to see you! How are you doing? I'm happy to hear you're enjoying the quotes and that they're giving you a little inspiration. It's always difficult for me to get started with the process too, but like you, it's much easier once I've mentally decided it needs to go.

In the context of my 9 year old asking me when I am going to tidy up, I follow the suggestion of someone in Chat, and decide to get her help. I ask her where to start. She says dining room. I ask which spot. She looks at the dresser. I tell her to start, and ask her to put everything we should keep on right side of dining table, and get rid of on left side of dining table. I leave her to it. She starts and goes steady and after a few minutes says: "We are going to live better now." Hope this inspires others with children. Fifteen minutes later- 2 empty junk drawers, clear shelves and all items on table grouped into piles (multiple scissors, staplers, etc.) and anothers input into what to toss and keep. I know this is not as great as all the quotes above, but had to add this because it was a new revelation to me. I love this thread so much. It has really motivated me and I love coming here every day. Thankyou disorganized dragon and other wonderful contributors.

“When life gets too cluttered, we neglect the important things.”--Emilie Barnes
“But I do know we’re deficient in some way. We are too involved in materialistic things, and they don’t satisfy us. The loving relationships we have, the universe around us, we take these things for granted.”--Mitch Albom, Tuesdays With Morrie
"Happiness resides not in possessions, and not in gold, happiness dwells in the soul."--Democritus
“If we were to gain God's perspective, even for a moment, and were to look at the way we go through life accumulating and hoarding and displaying our things, we would have the same feelings of horror and pity that any sane person has when he views people in an asylum endlessly beating their heads against the wall.”--Randy Alcorn, Money, Possessions and Eternity Slowpoke, I agree with Blackswan--what your daughter said is a great positive affirmation and I think it's a wonderful quote. So many of the best quotes are short, simple, and get right to the heart of the matter, which is exactly what "We are going to live better now" does. Because when you get right down to it, that's why we're all here--we want to live better now. Thank you so much for sharing it. (And I'm very happy to hear that you're finding lots of motivation thru this month's quotes. )

“Wealth is not an absolute. It is relative to desire. Every time we yearn for something we cannot afford, we grow poorer, whatever our resources. And every time we feel satisfied with what we have, we can be counted as rich, however little we may actually possess.”--Alain de Botton, Status Anxiety

"There are two ways to get enough: One is to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less."--G.K. Chesterton Love it, ClutterBlind! I should print that out and put that on my front door tonight.

“The things you own end up owning you. It's only after you lose everything that you're free to do anything.”--Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club
"Material blessings, when they pay beyond the category of need, are weirdly fruitful of headache."--Philip Wylie
"Hanging onto a bad buy will not redeem the purchase.”--Terence Conran, Essential Storage: The Back to Basics Guide to Home Design, Decoration & Furnishing
“Whatever you own, owns you. You have to clean it, store it, fix it, worry about it, keep paying for it, insure it, and it clutters your home and mind. Plus, you have to work more to get more stuff you can't afford to buy things you don't need. Less is more freedom to travel and have peace of mind. Collecting memorable experiences and friends is better than things.”--Lorrin L. Lee Me too, Mimi--having it all isn't all it's cracked up to be (especially when you don't have a place to put it).
