This is the first place that I am really aware of what our issues are. I am trying to make sure NOTHING comes in without a place. The problem is that I can't pictures something in the space without really seeing it in the space! So frustrating. I have decided on 2 large furniture items not coming in, but the rest is really vexing me. So far my kitchen is almost done. Bathrooms are close to being done. I am just so afraid that if I let something in that I can't find a place for it will stay and take up residence and then the snowball will start rolling down that hill....
I did make us all a chore chart with weekly and daily assignments. Made it clear it is all our responsibility to keep the house clean. Hubby is doing really well at not bringing a bunch of stuff here without really examining it and deciding if it will have a home somewhere. I have only removed 2 things he brought in. Styrofoam panels he put in the bathroom window. He has issues with windows! I understand that it is a heat issue, but the light is more important for keeping me out of the deep dark cave of depression. So I just calmly and quietly removed them. Did not make it an issue. He has not even asked where they went yet. I have informed him over and over that Oldest and I NEED the sunlight so maybe he gets it.

Hi Messyshell, don't panic, this is a new situation for you so you don't yet know how to handle it. It is unexplored territory, so perhaps you could see yourself as an explorer? If so, you will need a notebook and a pencil... you can write down new things you see and wonder about, in this new land. And you can write down things that you have tried, and whether they work or not - eg about the styrofoam - that you uncovered a dark place and let the light in, that you reminded the other explorers that you need lots of light to stay healthy... you could draw some little maps of each room and what you think you would like to put in there etc
The chore chart with assignments sounds excellent - explorers need to know who will fetch water and catch food and prepare the campsite etc! I think explorers also sit around the campfire at night and tell stories of their adventures and their hopes for the days ahead, too...

I understand where you are coming from. One thing I think you can do is reassure yourself that if you do bring something in that doesn't work out -- you can fall back on one of these choices to get rid of it: Throw it away Donate it Sell it (Craigslist etc.) Set it out for someone to pick up Give to a friend It helps me all the time to remember that if I do acquire something (even gifts) I still have the choice of eliminating it fast so that it doesn't lead me back into squalor. It's sure easier when it doesn't ever come in but I rely heavily on the various ways of getting rid of stuff. It's more of a manage rather than cure thing for us.

Shell, I'm so happy for your fresh new start! I'm sure you'll use your wise judgment and make your home one you feel comfortable in and will be very proud of. Sunlight is so important, especially for those of us who suffer from depression. Perhaps if DH comments on the Styrofoam, you can remind him of that. You so deserve to be happy and live life to the fullest. It's great to read all the positive progress you've made and even greater to know you and all your fur kids are together as you start this new life. Love SNM

Thank you all for your wonderful and kind words. I am feeling better after a nice good nights sleep. Going to the storage shed now to see where some of the things I am looking for and needing are. I am thinking of posting pictures as I go.

I think people need far less stuff than they think they need. Most people in the world don't have tons of "stuff".

Shell, if insulating the windows is his goal, Google "window heat film" and see what is available. I think it would satisfy your needs and your husband's needs.

I think you are so conscious now of taking care not to "overstock" the new place with anything that odds are very good you'll keep things under control very nicely.
