For as long as I can remember I've had a bad smell in my kitchen. I thought it was the refrigerator or maybe the pipes under the sink. It was actually the garbage can! Food got under the bag and it was getting moldy and gross. I used a plastic bag to pull out the bad food without touching it and then let the garbage can soak with a cleaner that contained bleach and hot water. No more smell!

Great you found it! This has happened to me also, my DC's tend to throw garbage in the kitchen trashcan without seeing that there is no bag... So I have to remember to always put a bag in right after I empty, or...... what you found happens! Jkai3

I had a bad smell in my kitchen last week. It seemed to be coming fromn the trash basket or sink. Finally traced it to the oil in my deep fat fryer. I dumped out and disposed of the oil and gave the fryer a good cleaning. Smells okay in there now. In the past, i have had trouble with potatoes or tomatoes left out. Sometomes you really have to search!

Me too! I`ve had a bad smell, vaguely like onions around and in my fridge for about a month. I even pulled out the fridge & cleaned under it a couple of weeks ago, and cleaned out the freezer, but it was still bad. My DS thought maybe a mouse had climbed in the compresser & died. Anyway, it turned out it was these oniony/garlicy roots a friend had given DH to try. I was going to try cooking with them, but forgot about them. Even though the bag was sealed, they still smelled really strong and got worse as they started rotting.
They are in the outside can now and it smells much better in here.

Indeed, btt, stinky stuff sucks! I just found mine--a couple of pears left out (in a bag, fortunately) to ripen that had gone WAAAAAAAY past ripe by the time I traced the smell to its source. EWWWWW!

I did that with a bag of potatoes--they were all mushy and....yucky! I had bought too large a bag. The bag was meshy so they kind of leaked...bleh.... I knew there was a reason why I make instant mashed potatoes! No matter how long you leave them in the pantry they don't smell or get nasty!

if you cant get a smell out of a garbage can, dont worry, garbage cans are largely cheap at walmart or kmart or the dollar store, so dont feel bad if you have to buy a new one and get rid of the old one

Ewww. Been there. On the one hand you feel really great for figuring it out, but then you realize you have to clean it!

I had a mystery stink in my laundry room. Swore it was my front loading washer. Even bought "smelly washer" off the internet and used it. No luck. Just the worst smell ever. Finally traced it to the overflow drain in the vanity/sink next to the washer (the room functions as a laundry and a 1/2 bath). I feed the dog in there, and sometimes pour dry kibble into smaller travel containers over the sink. DS was taking the spilled kibble and shoving it in the overflow drain hole. Then it got wet .... worst smell ever! It went on for weeks before I figured it out. Poured some bleach down the drain and it is all gone. That was my worst one.

Had a yukkky ick smell in the laudry room for some time now, a few weeks.
I am very strict about cleaning the cat's litterbox which is in the bathroom. Soon as I see him (Mesquite) RUN out of the bathroom I know he's a good boy and used his box. (yeah, he always runs out of the bathroom after...like "hey, it was't me who made that mess!!! I always put the mess in plastic bags but, duh, put the bags in the garbage in the laundry room. That's what was making the worstever smell...those bags from the litterbox.
So now, I make a special trip with those bags down to the garage to the big garbage bag there after each box cleaning.
Yes, his majesty has a loyal maid..me.
