I used to be overwhelmed with a dozen or more pieces of junk mail every. single. day. Over 6 days, that's 72 pieces of mail; 1 month = 288 pieces! I no longer have to spend time on any junk mail whatsoever. - I don't have to bring it into the house.
- I don't have to sort it from the normal mail.
- I don't have to decide where it goes - trash/shredder?
- I don't spend any time on shredding.
Sometimes I couldn't find the bills for all the junk mail! Eliminating junk mail completely made a huge difference in streamlining my bill-paying process. Following are the steps I took. Remove your name from junk mailing lists: In addition to that: - Use those prepaid envelopes that are enclosed in some junk mail. Return the enclosed card with a large message in bold ink that says "Please remove my name from your mailing list."
- No prepaid postage envelopes? Look for a web site address. Email them with the same request. Be sure to give them your name and address.
- No website? Look for a 1-800 # and call with the same request!
- Write, email, or phone your credit card company and request that they stop sending you unsolicited blank checks.
- Put junk mail in a Ziploc bag in your purse. Follow these steps at work during lunch or break time.
It took about 2 months of doing this consistently, but it was worth it! In the 8-10 years since I followed the above steps, I have received two pieces of junk mail! That reduced my cluttered stacks of mail, the time needed to destroy it safely, and the stress of the whole matter. That may sound like a lot of work. But it was nothing compared to the time and sanity I saved all those years.

the junk mail I get the most of is the food flyers with other added stuff from our local grocery stores....uggg they have so much that they stuff into the flyers.....I had not thought of having that stopped but wonder if I could find a way...perhaps if I took your listed steps above I might find out they would stop sending those....I still get some junk catalogs too...just amazing that the diamond store would send ME something about buying stuff I could never afford....I guess it is advice I could benefit from but I think I might miss my junk mail....

Here in Oz we can put a sticker on the letterbox which says "Authorised Australia Post Mail Only" or one that says "No Junk Mail', they seem to work pretty well. Our supermarket flyers etc are usually hand delivered by people who also deliver the free weekly paper.

If the food flyers are addressed to you, all you have to do is call and make the request. However, if they are addressed to "Resident", there's not much you can do. It works with eliminating catalogs of all kinds, too. After all, the companies do not want to be wasting their $ on production and mailing costs to someone who is not interested. Mouseann, I am having trouble getting greendimes.com. I wanted to check it out to see what it is all about. Also, you wrote "even faster than 2 years is greendimes.com." I'm not quite sure what you were referencing to taking 2 years. I mentioned that it took 2 months for me to do this. Perhaps I missed something in someone else's post.

I live in a house which is divided into flats and rooms and all mail is delivered to the common hallway. Since I got into this tidy business I've put a box by a table in the hall. Mail goes on the table. Junk goes into the box. Most of the junk is delivered leaflets not addressed mail. Junk paper goes out in the box for paper collection once a week - well it does if someone remembers.

Efficient suggestion, Rory! Did any of the other occupants thank you or congratulate you for providing a clever solution for their common problem? Or perhaps they weren't aware who did it?

Thanks Caring Friend - I don't think it was recognised as a common problem and it was not by me for 15 years. Actually I did a bit more than I said in my post. The local council give us large plastic boxes for putting out recycling stuff for collection. These boxes are useful for storage so frequently disappear when left out. I ordered two new ones and painted out house number on the lids and on the boxes and so far no one has taken them.
I'm not looking for thanks but it would be nice if folks would put the box out as I can't lift it.

Thanks Caring Friend - I don't think it was recognised as a common problem..... You may be right. So many members post about piles & piles of papers and the chaos with it, I thought this would help.

Sorry Caring Friend I was not clear in my last post. I meant 'common' in the sense of common to the people living in the same house as I. For myself I was simply in a state of denial.
From my experience it is very much a common problem amongst people who have problems with hoarding and messyness including myself.
Thanks for posting about this important topic.
