I just got this thing -- an application that checks all of your email addresses at one time and tells you when you've got a new email.
In setting it up, it searches through all your emails for each address, going all the way back to the beginning of your set up date with gmail, or hotmail, or whatever. Anything you haven't purged will show up in the new application.
18,728 emails that I need to purge. That is not a typo. I have mail going back to 2003, when Sean wasn't even born yet. The only reason I don't have any from before then is that I deleted my old email accounts and started using the ones I have now.
If I had a LICK of sense I'd just block out everything before, say, 2009. But will I?
Right.
So here I am, deleting emails. One, by one, by one. I have a feeling I'll still be doing the same thing in 2011.

I don't know whether all your mail is personal or whether some is work-related, but I will say this:
I purge my purely personal email with impunity; work email I save for YEARS. In number of instances, being able to go back and produce the original email has been invaluable.
So I don't think your one-by-one deleting system is so bad.

Well Misc, at a rough calculation I think you will have to delete 90 a day, seven days a week to get rid of them all by the end of the year, I don't know if that will influence you to be ruthless, or patient!

Computers make it easier to store and ignore a hoard, don't they?
I went through my accounts and got rid of a lot of old stuff a few months ago, and I need to do it more often. It's almost like I'm afraid I will run out of stuff to read or do, or I believe I will someday have the time to read it all. The truth is there will always be more where that came from, and I need to get that through my head.
Meanwhile, at least if it is stored on a computer, I don't have to really look at it. That is good and bad.

This is how I got rid of clutter and it will work for you while decluttering emails, if you want to try it........ "Take care of today's stuff + a couple from the past." In terms of email, that would be after reading each of today's emails, decide immediately if it is necessary to keep or can it be trashed? If it must be kept, make a category and a folder for that category and place it there. But make a decision! After all of today's emails have been banished from your screen, go to the backlog and do the same with 5-10 of those. Start at the bottom of the "pile" of old emails because that is where it will be easier to make decisions. It amazes me how often I keep "stuff" or "emails" because of indecision, then in a month or so, the decision is very clear! Do this every day and logic dictates that eliminating the new + some of the old, eventually they will all be gone. Also, remember to empty your virtual email "trash can" daily.

I purge all my e-mails {ALL: TODOS, tutti, OMNIA, EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY ONE} several times a year.
I cannot stand the sight of a huge in-box. Do I really need to re-read about the newest Elvis impersonator joke or whatever CR*P other people send me? I purge my receipts, my trash, my sends: as often as I can. I have never missed anything once it was gone.
If any e-mail is important, I PRINT IT OUT when I get it: example: PayPal receipt.
I regard the computer as an OFFICE tool, and as such, I print hard-copies of business stuff. The rest is play-time-stuff, and as such is worthless in my small home office.
For the web: I am fanatic about 'saving' favourites in various categories. I clean this up occasionally too. My DearHubby laughs, but I"M THE ONE who has to search around for his old car part sites if they get lost.......

I purge my emails from my screen too--but am I misunderstanding MiSCs post? It sounds like it's calling up things that have already been deleted, right? If not, wouldn't they still be on your screen and you wouldn't need an application to find them?
As long as your programs are working and you don't have to delete something to free up disk space somewhere, why do you have to purge them from wherever they remain when you remove them from your screen?

Okay, I figured out how I broke it and started over. But there are still that many emails to go through. Actually, probably a good many more. It was trying to digest all of my email addresses at once, and its memory locked up. I'm just doing one account at a time now.
As for why I'm doing it, I just really don't like having all that gumming up my inboxes. It's just... a thing. I don't know.
My big thing right now is: Do I keep all the emails to and from my father? I haven't talked to him since January, and I don't expect to speak to him again, frankly. Sad. I keep skimming over his, thinking that I'll decide about those later. I'll probably keep them.
I'm also holding out all the emails that have pics attached. There are thousands of those.
I need to take my meds. ECHO!!!!
