We have been here over a month and I have a few thoughts: I am not a bad housekeeper, I was just unmotivated and not experienced. I am getting pretty good at thinking of wiping off the counters, putting stuff away when done with it, and keeping up the dusting and vacuuming. I think the old place was a grease pit from the moment we moved in. Everything that was out on the counters or shelves had a thick coating of grease ALL THE TIME. I don't fry and rarely use oil. I just assumed it was my bad housekeeping and cursed when I had to use something because I had to spend so much time cleaning it. Since we have been here I have not had to scrub stuff before I use it. Amazing! Here has new paint and carpet. I cleaned everything that was not new. My appliances I leave on my counters stay clean. Maybe dusty, but no thick layer of grease. Remembering to do things is not second nature to everyone. Good to know that other people who have clean homes sometimes forget when they last changed their sheets, too.

Good understandings, Messyshell! Interesting how in the old place, you thought the grease was something you felt was your own, when obviously it wasn't! (But it was still in your environment, and affecting you of course.)

BTT, don't strive for normal, that is just too common. Strive for being the best possible version of you! Remember, we like you.

Normal is soooo overrated. And yet I still go overboard sometimes. I spent over 30 minutes scrubbing and scrubbing my deep fryer heating unit. Scraping and scrubbing until my fingers are sore today. I should have done a "good enough for now" job and moved on to the other stuff that needed my attention. Oldest finally took it away and wrapped it up so I would not start again after dinner. Why do I feel the need for some things to be perfect. And yet leave other things undone or 1/2 done. How do you find a balance!!! Did empty another box out of the garage.

Hey...sometimes you have to overdo things to realize that you overdid it.
As much as I like fried food, deep-frying is pretty messy. If you minimize the amount of frying you do, your kitchen will be much easier to clean.

Actually the deep fryer puts out very little grease outside of the fryer itself. I put a towel over my coffee maker that the fryer was next to and it was almost completely clean. It is much neater than using a pan to fry in. The main mess is the fryer itself. It has been neglected for quite a while. Big surprise. We don't use it very often mainly for health reasons, but once in a while it is fryer night!

This is great. Just how I think it will be when I'm out of this squalor. Won't be as good as moving to a new place, but ...
So glad you turned out to be a better housekeeper than you thought.

change the sheets?? I thought we just bought new ones when the others got too stiff-- you are so right-- not all of us are born house keepers and I am glad for that--- I do other things well and so do you== I know having less stuff and more space makes it easier for me to see what to do as I go----
