That is so sad. I am glad they found them. Has anyone read the novel "Homer and Langley" it is about 2 brothers who perished in their hoard way back in the early 1900s. It's based on the true story. Hoarding progresses and worsens without some type of help; whether it is self help or a combination of support and therapy etc. that's the message I get from a lot of these stories. I'm glad that so many of us here will never have to experience the rock bottom that so many before us have because of awareness of the problem and seeking and working on help for it early on.

I am so glad that the authorities declined to release the names of the couple.

Oh, the poor things. I hope they recover.
I hesitated before reading the comments attached to the article, dreading the usual venom directed at the hoarder. I was surprised and happy to find a lot of sympathy, and a recognition of the mental-process disorder involved. I think the public is slowly becoming less judgmental and more knowledgeable about hoarding.

A person can survive 4 or 5 weeks without food. But they could not have been trapped under debris for weeks and survived unless they were trapped down there with something to drink or a supply of food with a lot of moisture content in it. About 3-5 days without water and you die, depending on how hydrated you were before, whether you eat anything and your general health. And if you cry (and I would cry if I were trapped), urinate or sweat very much you dehydrate a bit quicker.
That news story is, at best, incomplete and at worst, downright wrong about the time frame.
But no matter, I hope they're going to be all right and get into some better conditions.
