Today is my day off. It has been a particularly rough week at work and I am looking forward to taking it easy today. Wanted to make protein smoothies for breakfast. Got out the blender. Yuck! The outside was covered in the thick grease and dirt from the old place. Inside it was clean, but that outside was gross. I sprayed and scrubbed. Nice and clean! Made our breakfast smoothies. Oldest wanted a toasted bagel with his smoothie. Pull out the toaster. Also gross. After he made his bagel I scrubbed and sprayed it, too. Now I have 2 nice and white appliances again! How did I let them be that way? How did I USE them like that? Now the counters have to be cleaned again, too. Continued on to the stove and fan housing. Another thing I just learned, the cover to that comes off to clean. Who knew? Went into Youngest's room to check for dishes. Made his bed, but noticed the bottom edge of his comforter was dirty. In fact it was PEED ON BY THE STUPID DOG!!! Grrrrr. Carpet scrubbing time. Checked house for any other spots. Found several places he has been marking. My fingers are so sore from this. Got out his crate, scrubbed and sprayed it, too. He is now on house arrest! Retraining time for the dog as well as the humans in this house. Loaded and ran the dishwasher. Divided the laundry and have 2 loads done so far. Still have the bathroom to do. (My new every Thursday chore.) Oldest will be vacuuming later. Have to wait until the carpets are more dry first. When will all this become 2nd nature? Or will it ever? I mean the toaster--how did we all just use it like that? Will we now make sure it stays this way or will I wait and only notice when it is gross again? Will I ever get the hang of maintenance?

I think part of it is/was we had so much to do and left things too long- I remember my mama wiped things off every time she used them and therefore avoided the big cleaning jobs- what is important is that things are getting done now and the past is gone so do not be hard on yourself-- be proud of where you are hugs from Meme

Dear Shell,
It will get better.
Retrain the dog, and start slowly developing the habits.
It will work, and it will get better.

yes rest at work that is the ticket....snoring in your cubicle will cause problems though...I am kidding...I do not know what type of work you do....I am just laughing at the statement above....

Your doing a wonderful job Shell!! Eventually it will all become second nature and you'll find yourself cleaning things after you use them without even realizing it. It must be great having that fresh start in your new home. As for the fur kid. Don't give up hope yet. As mimmi stated, just retrain him. At times even a house trained dog will mess in a new place. Keep up the good work! Hugs SNM

I think part of it is/was we had so much to do and left things too long- I remember my mama wiped things off every time she used them and therefore avoided the big cleaning jobs- That's my mom. If she's in the kitchen, she has a damp cloth in her hand. If she's cooking, she puts it down in the sink, but as soon as she leaves the stove, it's back in her hand. I commented on it once, and she said, "If you keep going, you only have to start once." Out of the mouths of mamas...

Bad dog! but as stuffnomore said, dogs often "forget" things in a new place. I'm sure you will be able to retrain him quickly.
don't beat yourself up. the grime sticks on slowly so we can't see it happening.

I am really new to maintenance, but I'm slowly learning One thing I've learned is that, as a messy person, I'm used to a clean up job taking hours or even days when I get around to it. Unless you have a huge family, you won't be doing loads of laundry every day. And if your family is that huge, lots of hands should be helping Also, there's nothing wrong with not cleaning a whole room in a day. I clean my bathroom in pieces (sink one day, toilet the next, floor the next). I wash one portion of the tub every time I take a shower as well. Like you said, you have two clean appliances now. It's not second nature for me (yet), but it does get easier and easier as more time passes.

you will get the hang of maintance im sure of it! it just takes time. i know that ive had problems but i am trying really hard to wipe things down in the kitchen as i go or when im finished in there instead of just walking away with the "i will do it later" mentality. trying real hard to wipe down the bathroom sink after each use. im not sure its a habit yet but i do remember to do this stuff for the most part. and i do believe it will save me a horrible clean up job later on. and yes we have to let go of our past. thats how things used to be not how they are now.
