I now have GRASS in my back yard, after multiple years of weeds, bare dirt, weeds, failed garden project, weed, dust, bare dirt, and so on I also have GRASS in the front yard. SIMULTANEOUSLY! I believe that there was only a very short window of a few years [out of the last 30] in which we had a lawn both front and back. Mr. Hunk and crew were here part of the week. My dear hubby did all the preps, beforehand, over the last many months; removing ALL the dead grass. Next up: fix back roof. This MUST be done before 2010-22 winter. It has been fixed/replaced already TWICE in 30 years. We were not treated fairly by the previous roofers.
Then: completely replace front stairs. My DearHubby's late brother did them, from scratch, about 25 years ago. Brick, cement and stone: didn't last more than 15 years. We paid him for this work, it wasn't a freebie. Mr. Hunk is WORRIED that the stairs will collapse ONTO ONE OF THE CARS. They have been fixed AT LEAST twice. This time they have to be totally replaced.
I know that much of my HOME SQUALOR stemmed from *financial difficulties *depression *work issues *family and personal illnesses over the past many years.
Alas, much of the work FOR WHICH WE PAID $$$$$ in the past DID NOT HOLD UP AS EXPECTED
The Romans built acqueducts which are still standing centuries later. My brick/stone/concrete stairs lasted 15 years.
aaarrrggghhhh and onwards.

Dear Script,
Congratulations on the lawn!
You have my sympathy on the repairs not holding up. I can point to multiple examples of this in my own house, and it is very frustrating indeed.
Onward, indeed, you will overcome these other troubles.

Well, Script--if it makes you feel any better, DH and I live in a "money pit," too!
I could list all the repairs/remodels/restorations that we have done to this place and a list of all the things that still are in URGENT need of being done, but it would take far too long, and it would be far, far too depressing. . .!!!
All I can say is "congratulations" on all that you have accomplished, and "keep on keepin' on!"

How wonderful, Mr Hunk is to remain a faithful worker and friend. Hooray for DH for prepping the ground for the new sod.
I do hope you get those stairs repaired as soon as possible. With Mr. Hunk in charge, they should last you beyond your expected lifetime. And as long as he is in charge of your roof, or at least does the research to find you a really good roofer, it will turn out well, too.
Here's hoping Mr. Hunk continues a long and healthy life.

Here's hoping Mr. Hunk continues a long and healthy life. Mr. Hunk is closing in on 40; he smokes and is now fairly heavy. I worry about him. His helper, Young Hunk (Cameron) lives a much cleaner life. I know that there are a lot of unscrupulous and incompetent tradespeople around. One of my older cousins [gay woman, very capable] retired from teaching and then took up mini-home-reno work for women. She does very well too, because people can trust her. Unfortunately, she cannot do the major-type stuff we need, or I would hire her in a flash. Furthermore: I am realizing some truths about my home, from conversations with others and working with real estate folks for family business things. Although we do not have air conditioning, storm windows, fancy-schmantzy washrooms, we DO HAVE: *all updated wiring: no old knob-and-tube *all copper plumbing *a newish GOOD furnace *no asbestos *good insulation everywhere *new double-or-triple glazed windows in baths and kitchen *a new shingle roof on main part of house [25 year guarantee] *mostly finished basement and a decent furnace room *no broken windows [at one point we had at least 30 broken panes] *a high dry basement We paid GOOD MONEY and did a lot of heavy work OURSELVES to reach this level of decent structure. I am totally 100% grateful for the love and support I have received here and at Squalor Survivors, helping me throught the rough spots and frustrations. xxoo from Script

Just seeing your thread here has burned into my brain, and motivated me to mow my lawn. Every day I popped on here to check out mail, and subliminally it was working on me "lawn squalor" "lawn squalor"... I mowed the front, to make sure that I kept up with appearances, but was totally avoiding the backyard. So today, now that the weather has finally cooled down a bit, I mowed the backyard (first time of the year). It was long and shaggy, and looked totally forgotten, but was lush and green. Now I have a lovely backyard again. Thanks for the unintentional push. ETA: First time of the year really means "first time of the season, after the winter months". It's not one year worth of long!
