One of the reasons I have so much clutter is due to 25 years of overspending.... I am trying to break out of overspending habits to avoid even more stuff piling up. Today I realised I have turned a corner because I spotted a 50% off sign today at one of my favourite stores.....and I actually managed to turn and walk away without even going in!!

I have the same problem. A couple months ago I found a bag of brand new in the package toys that I'd bought for the kids. The 2 year old receipt was in the bag. We're buying lots of new stuff for the house and I've had to really be careful to avoid buying "extra" stuff that we don't need. It's hard!

Shopping can become a habit - sort of an adrenaline rush. Been there and done that.

HOOOORAY mrsmess! That was an awesome thing you did! Not easy but it can be done. The beginning of my junk collecting started with garage sales ... "this is soooo cheap, gotta have it." NOT! Last year I made a new rule for me. If I do not immediately need it, it does not come into the house ... PERIOD! And this has worked for me but I did quit going to garage sales . And for Christmas and birthdays I told everyone that I only want gift certificates to restaurants until I say otherwise. This too has worked for me!

Thank you everyone for helping me celebrate my small victory! After posting I initially wondered if it was too trivial to have shared...but I see that there are so many lovely souls here who understand how a small thing like that is actually quite a big achievement.

Congratulations that is a huge breakthru Count me down as another person who has been dealing with over spending -- so I know what a big deal this really is. One of my recent strategies even is not to look at the ads (newspaper, tv, I just shy away from ads, catalogs etc.) and it also helps.

That's a big accomplishment! It's such a temptation to "just look around."
If you don't acquire it, you don't have to organize or clean it.
