I'm speechless.
I'm going to go hug my little boy, who's 6, and who is in big trouble. He was sent to bed early, with no tv. I need to go hug him.

Okay the social worker had a cold - but if your job is to inspect a home and there is dim lighting - then turn on a light and look around for pities sake! You would think she would carry a flashlight or something for things like this. Okay and what about the previous caseworker - what did they testify - cause this one apparently had been off the case for awhile.

Those poor kids. I don't know how popular my comment here is gonna be, but I understand your feeling sick looking at the picture. But it's not just that that gets me. It's the combination of two things: that image, and children. To see children in that environment makes me ache all over. I have to walk away from this thread now. It's too much for me.

There is no mention of sexual abuse, success19. Assault (lifting a child off the floor), failure to provide, even neglect was mentioned, but not a word about sexual abuse in any of the three articles.
The first two articles were sensationally written, poorly written, in fact. I would not be willing to draw a conclusion based on these reports. I am not saying the reporting is inaccurate, only that I tend to suspect sensational journalism as it is often unreliable.

Just a clarification. Article one and three are written by the same woman, a journalist that is asked to write specifically about social injustice situations. She is known as a strong advocate who actively helps the people she reports about.
On many occasions she has worked to find the resources (money, clothes, furniture, etc.) for families who are in horrific situations. She is definitely known for her blunt reporting of the facts, letting people make their own judgements. Good or bad writing, I can't comment. She talks the talk, but also walks the walk. She's a community reporter who actively seeks to address problems at a grassroots level, which is more than I can say for most journalists. I've read her articles for many years, and can't find fault with her.
The second article, I have no idea about the author... but it does reflect the same information that I have read elsewhere.
The issue remains; it horrifies me to know that this is one of perhaps hundreds of cases like this. And only for a mistake/miracle (the child getting hold of a phone), was the situation realized. The fact that this family was able to have one floor kept in pristine condition, while locking two of the children in the basement squalor is what particularly shocks me. It's not a family who is unable to clean or be organized. That's what makes it so much more shocking and abusive.

It is called "selective" child abuse - some children treated well and others not. Sad.

The social worker was most likely not even in the house, and never saw the kids. It's not that rare--they're so overworked that they often don't make the visits they're supposed to, and fill out the paperwork as if they did. It's deplorable. That's one of the reasons nightmares like this fall through the cracks.

its not right but this isnt recent,it happened over a year ago. What is also almost the most disturbing is that this is selective abuse, other children lived on the clean main floor
