Yes, but the court case is happening now so we only know of the details now. There has been a media ban on the story while they investigated. Right now, all the children (upstairs and downstairs) are in foster care. Apparently it's a situation of a father having three or four kids with a wife or girlfriend, then having a few other kids with another woman. That second set are the ones who live in the basement.

Good Lord, no matter how "overworked" the so-called social worker I can't understand how she could see something like that and OK it. Stuffy nose my foot, what happened to her eyes and ears?

clutterfree mentioned that she might not have actully been in the home, perhaps faked hte papers due to too many cases. i think that is a possibiity that prolly happens more than we realize.

It's a year old because that's how long it took the case to come up in court. Who knows how long it had been going on. Those poor kids. All of them, including the upstairs kids will have serious issues to deal with in life.
Has anyone read "A Child Called IT" by Dave Peltzer? He also wrote "Lost Boy" and "A Man Named Dave", and a couple more. He was severely abused by his mother, while his siblings were treated normally. I saw him speak at a Social Workers conference a few years ago. It is impressive that he ended up normal, and able to talk about and write about his severe abuse.
This is far beyond squalor or poor housekeeping. This is sick. If the adults involved are ever allowed to get any of them back or have other kids, then the justice system is totally screwed up.

If that is the case then the worker needs to be severely censured. Sacking is not enough, lying to the point that it endangers a child means that charges need to be brought against her for child endangerment, as well as fraud. Whether she saw the problem and turned a blind eye, or just didn't take the time to investigate in the first place, it was her job, paid job, to make sure these kids were OK, and she dropped the ball in a very big way. This is not just a typo due to being "overworked", this is straight out fraud, neglect and incompetence.
