I turned on my AC for the first time this year on saturday, and left for a few hours. I expected to come home to a nice cool apt., but instead came home to a sweltering apt. which smelled awful. The AC was broken and blowing hot air, and I think that a critter must have died inside it, for the air from the AC had that horrible peculiar odor to it.
So now I've got to call the apt. management to send a maintenance guy. Last year maintenance reported me to management, and I had to pass an inspection before they'd renew my lease. I don't want to go through that again, so I want to make sure that my place is looking good before I make the call.
I've been mostly 'in maintenance' for the past year, but I had been backsliding a little, things were accumulating in corners, my dining room table was getting covered in stuff again, and I had stalled out on a couple of major reorganization projects that I started a while back. So I spent about 10 hours yesterday cleaning and organizing, concentrating on my downstairs area.
Tonight I'm going to work on my bedroom, which has backslid the most in the past few months. I doubt if the maintenance guy will even go upstairs, but I want to get it clean anyways (just in case, plus its really been bothering me that I've let it get so messy again).
It feels good to be making progress, looking forward to relaxing in the cool AC!

good for you! good for not putting this off. you deserve a nice place. clean for yourself as well as your landlord. the ac will make a nice reward, and lots of kudos if you're cleaning in heat, thats always really hard. I know what you mean about being in maintaineance but also haveing backslid, it jsut creeps up on you, doesn' it, you think you're maintaining and then you realise how many little things you put off just a little have so quickly added up.

Cleaning in the heat is no fun. Beg, borrow, steal (well not really but if you find one sitting on the curb, take it because IME, they usually work) fans to get you through.
It will be nice have A/C.

Hi, SZ! Good to see you around! Hope the AC gets repaired soon. I know what you mean about backsliding a bit...I noticed a corner...that I had totally de-cluttered months ago...starting to refill. And it's all my fault. Those items simply didn't saunter into that space and make camp on their own. My defense of that space was surely lacking. It bothers me, too, when I don't follow through and keep maint. areas in maint. Wishing you continued progress...and...some cooling AC! Pony

Thanks y'all. I do have 5 or 6 fans, thank goodness. I live in Atlanta, and it gets pretty hot here, but I've been waiting until I finally paid all my heating bills from the winter before I started using my AC.
My AC in my car's not working either, I hope to get that fixed later this week as well (going on a roadtrip next weekend to visit my mom, which is about a 4 hr drive each way).
In other update news, I spent most of memorial day emptying out my mini warehouse unit - I'm renting a storage shed in my apt. complex, which is about the same space as I had in my mini warehouse, but it's $50 a month cheaper (plus, it comes with a reserved parking space in a covered garage area). Wish I'd thought of that sooner!
I still have too much stuff in storage, but I've got it much better organized now (on shelves and in huge tupperware-type bins), whereas before everything was just stacked on top of each other. This will make going through all the boxes and discarding stuff a lot easier, plus its very close to home (about a 100 ft. from my apt), so its a lot more convenient.

Dear Slothzilla,
Doesn't it feel great to be showing the stuff who is in charge again? Whenever I give in and just start getting stuff orderly or gone, it makes me wonder why I waited so long.
Good for you for paring down on the storage, and I hope your a/c is in working order very quickly.

Thanks messymimi.
It's funny that you should say that about "showing the stuff who is in charge again". One of the things running through my head while cleaning on Sunday was 'either you control your stuff, or it controls you". Too much stuff can sure weigh you down, especially when you let it get out of hand and take over your living space!
