I think it's okay to feel a little regret for something you didn't pick up, as long as you can see it in perspective and know that there are thousands of things that you'd like to have and never will, that's just life. That makes it less personal, rather than, oh I should have taken that ONE specific thing from the alley, it becomes "yeah, there are many nice items out there in the world that I won't ever have room for--in alleys, stores, other peoples' houses". When you have a home and choose what items to put in it, that's also a choice of what NOT to put in it, just like any choice in life will preclude other choices. When I think of that way I don't feel it as a personal deprivation, I just think of it as something everyone exeriences.
I guess I shouldn't have to get into existential philosophy in order to resist picking something up in an alley, but hey--whatever works!
