The building manager called earlier tonight to say there is a bathtub problem upstairs and that he would have to come into my apartment tomorrow morning.
After a sudden automatic stab of "Uh oh," I remembered that there's no squalor in this place anymore and said, "Fine."
Then I jumped up to do-----nothing. I looked around and thought, Huh. There's really nothing you need to do before he comes in here.
Still hard to believe; this is truly the best part of being out of squalor.

Oh, that must be such an awesome feeling. I am so envious. (Drat, we don't have an "envious" emoticon. ) A toast to you and Spitty . . . Congratulations on your freedom from squalor!

Yay!!! I am so happy for you. I realized today that anyone can come in my house right now. It is still not fully unpacked, but there is no squalor or clutter stacked all over. It is a really nice feeling! Now to keep it this way. Any tips for that?

moggyfan--I think your post says it all--the definition of success for anyone with hoarding/squalor tendencies is to get to that feeling of NON-panic when someone needs to come in. I'm sure every single person on this board knows that sinking feeling in your gut when the building manager knocks on the door, or something (important) in your house breaks and you start calculating how long you have to clean the place up before you MUST call for repair. I've been working on my place for a LONG time and have made huge progress, but I would still hate for anyone to come in without at least a couple days notice! Congratulations on your accomplishment and I'm sorry about the bathtub upstairs--I hope it doesn't mean breaking into your ceiling! Diane

That's wonderful!!!! I couldn't open the door for the census taker 2 days ago NOT because of the house but I wasn't dressed and my hair was a mess and no make-up on. SNM

congrats moggyfan! I've backslid to the point where i'd need to do some serious crisis cleaning before i'd let anyone in.. but its not entirely THAT bad.

it does feel great--- I wanted a new toilet last fall and it was just a phone call away and no cleaning up for the plumber to come--- there is something about finding nothing to do except keep on keeping on--------congratulations from Meme

Thanks everyone. Yes, it really *does* feel great.
In truth, the "stepping out of squalor" was a long time coming, and a months-&-months-long undertaking, but the rewards, especially in the form of peace of mind, have been great.
And, I guess they did come in today, though nothing seems out of place--and the ceiling is intact ;-)
