I have come home from the worst year of teaching I have ever experienced. I have not been cleaning anything lately but the bathroom. It is cleaned and as beautiful as that bathroom will get without a complete redo which it needs. So I started picking up stuff that wasn't where it needs to be because this stuff was literally all over the house. Towels, washcloths, shampoo, fingernail polish, medicine, soap, body wash, lotion ,spray perfume, toothpaste (unopened) in boxes and so on. All of this stuff belongs on the linen closet which in in the hall adjacent to the bathroom which needs a total redo. In short this closet in in a crappy location and is not user friendly. I am lining the shelves which of course are a bizarre size and getting those little bin things to store like items like the fingernail polish and the remover. Any other ideas??

Even if you have unopened things, if you aren't going to use them SOON....toss them! Be ruthless! How many tubes of toothpaste, bottles of body wash, etc. do we really need?
Good luck Iguanamamma!

I agree with Annie -- be ruthless and get stuff narrowed down what you know you will use -- then you can get an idea of what you actually need. Here we solved (temporarily) our storage problem in the bathroom with one of those over the toilet organizer things -- we actually placed it across from the toilet though with the clothes hamper/basket where the toilet would normally be and it actually looks decent. (I think ) Neat at least. Good luck to you -- I know the challenge!!!

I don't have any advice, but I would just like to commiserate on the worst year of teaching ever. I had the same experience.

Make a list of what you have so you won't buy more - thinking you don't have it. Figure out experation dates on things and use them first.

Welcome back iggie So sorry the you had a bad year of teaching.... bad work vibes must be in the air this year. Are you able to leave the kitties with self feeders and water things while you're away for the weekend? My DD has 2 cats and when then go to NJ or NY to visit the Fiances family they leave their 2 and add an extra litter box for the times away only. I've known of her leaving them for up to 4 days without any problem at all. I hope your summer is a restful and fun one for you after a hard year of teaching. Hugs SNM

Hi iguana, having just cleaned a major closet I have to say I like the idea of the little bins to store things in. It sounds like you have a lot of little, oddly shaped things that won't stack well, and if they are contained in bins or boxes it will look a lot neater. I suggest labels though, otherwise you'll forget what you have and then go out and buy still more.
I like to stock up on things too, but only when there are great sales when I can get things cheap, and only what won't go bad before use--I learned that years ago, the hard way. I do save quite a bit of money by buying at the best sale prices, though.
Hope the project is going well!
Diane
PS, forgot to say sorry about the teaching--my sister retired last year from 35 years of teaching and by the last few years was completely burnt out--she said the kids and parents were getting worse and worse, not to mention school politics--she was SO ready to retire.

I discovered that I had five tubes of toothpaste, 4 bottles of developer for hair dye, about 25 bars of soap and the decluttering is not going well. It's kind of like teaching this year. I know what I need to do it's just getting it done. Aaugh!

I have a clear rectangular vase in my bathroom, I had stuck bits of mosaic glass on the side (irridescent pale colours) and didn't really know what to do with it, now it is on a shelf in the bathroom filled with bars of soap (unwrapped) - looks good, and is handy for the soap - I am a believer in letting soap dry for a while before using it as it lasts better! Maybe you have space in your bathroom for something like this, or a stack of containers (eg the clear fronted sort for shoes) which enclose things but still enable you to see how much you have of something

Things do "go bad" that you wouldn't realize. My Mom bought a huge amount of pink toilet paper (bathroom tissue) back in the 1970's apparently on sale. It was in the back of her linen closet till just recently. She opened one roll recently to find it had turned to dried out powder. You couldn't even unroll the sheets without getting a dusty explosion! paper products don't last forever !
