Onwardandupward -- oh yes I agree this is absolutely a GREAT sign! I aspire to at at this stage and I'm getting closer too. shopgirl -- I was just talking to a woman who was deeply disappointed in the garage sales she went to on the "rich" side of town -- she said they didn't have any good stuff and the stuff they had was too used up. I thought it was funny and I can believe it -- over here where we live it seems we overspend and we have really good "junk" which is not conducive to being able to buy a nicer house.

I concur - you are consciously shopping. I know I talked to someone who owns about 30 pieces of clothing - she buys an expensive blouse not 10 cheap ones. I am not sure I can get as low as 30 - but I understand the concept.

I am out of town this coming weekend, but the one after that, watch out! Thank you for broadening my horizions! (and helping to shrink my wardrobe). Onward

OH Congratulations on your state of mind. This really is HUGE. So happy for you. I am in maintenance too and try very hard not to bring into the house anything I do not love. This excludes that stinky kitty food in cans. THEY love it so............................. Me it gags me to feed them. But they are so cute. When you find the right flatware and rugs and curtains you will know it and buy them. I usually find things when I am not actively looking. Then I do not usually have the money. So you are WAY ahead of me there. So very happy for you and too that you are not only keeping your house all nice but you are ready to make it beautiful too. Maggie

It's interesting. I don't see it as a rich versus poor/middle class thing, with an image of wealthy people having one or two valued items, while poor/middle class drown in lots of cheap items.... Squalor is not an economic level.
I see it more as quality over quantity. It is something that has always seemed foreign to me. My friends from France and Switzerland always amaze me by the tiny amount of clothing they own, yet the great quality of the items. They are not wealthy, but they spend their money on quality. Same with the food items they purchase. They buy specialty items, but eat less and healthier, thus spending the same amount of money as a bagful of junk and processed foods.
There is one expression that I always heard growing up. It's a variation of this one: There is the old arabic quote: If you have two loaves of bread, sell one and buy flowers.
But the variation I heard was, "If you have two loaves of bread, sell one and buy soup". (maybe it comes from our obsession in brazil to always be clean and take several showers a day, regardless of how impoverished a household we live in...? not sure... but the same idea... It's better to take care and keep clean the few things you DO have, than to have a houseful of dirty unkempt things.)

I am really inspired by what everyone has said. I am hopeful that I will be able to someday get into this mindset when it comes to taking care of my physical self.
I like the thought of only choosing good foods, choosing to spend my leisure time exercising instead of sofa sitting, etc.....but I am not quite there yet. But perhaps if I apply the same strategy I used with the mess, and take care of myself as best I can when I can muster the will to do it, and hopefully the rest will follow.
This new change could lead to more changes. Wouldn't that be great?

Onward that is such a good sign. I have just noticed that a bit in myself too over the last week, that I am developing an aversion to bringing things into my home!
