We had a bit of a delay getting started today because of the soccer game. (Portugal won and I live in Little Portugal, so good luck with traffic today!) But after they all arrived, we got started pretty quick.
My sister D had watched Hoarders & done a bit of research, so she was well-armed with supportive suggestions and purposeful questions. She also gave me a hug/high-five/golf-clap for almost every toss-out.
I even managed to ditch 33 videotapes!! I can't believe I actually got rid of them! I still have over 200 more to go through, and it's always been the "there's nothing wrong with them, they're still GOOD!!" argument that had me keeping them all these years. But I just couldn't wait any longer for the recycling industry here to figure out how to deal with them. So out they went! I couldn't find all the Buffy tapes, though; only about 5 of them. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the other 22.
Everyone survived. In fact it was even kind of fun, to see what I could surprise them with, in my ability to let stuff go. Of course, some of the things I did hang onto were just beyond their understanding. But that's ok.
I only had one meltdown; when all three of them were pushing me to get rid of (not just give away, but outright throw out!!) an old skirt that used to belong to D. She had given it to me years ago, and I always meant to wear it again, once the weight was gone. But the elastic was crunchy when we pulled it out of the box. I put it aside for a while & dealt with other stuff, then came back to it again. After much back & forth, I said to put it in the donate box. Then I just burst into tears. I'm not even really sure why. They said maybe I wasn't ready to let it go yet, so we put it in the Keep bin. It could have just been the whole day getting to me, I don't know. But it really went much much better than any of us thought it would. D is even coming back later this week to help me go through more papers.
After everyone left and I had a chance to look things over, I realised that I did really great today!! And it isn't as hopeless anymore. I CAN do this!

Yes the elastic got scrunchy - cause stuff degrades and the tapes probably did too (been there and did that - what a waste of money) - take a picture of that skirt and toss it - it will be okay! Good job!

Yay for you! I so know what you mean about the videotapes. I just listed 13 on freecycle and I am hoping I can stay strong and actually give them away if someone wants them!
