So, at first I was planning to move in late July. Then mid-July. Then sometime between mid-July and early August. Then, finally, when we found out that we were for sure getting the apartment we wanted, the move-in date was supposed to be July 9th or 10th. Cool, right? I'd be totally done with everything by then & even have some extra free time to see some friends before I move and to, you know, pack.
Then, today, my boyfriend drops a little bomb on me. He wants to move on July 3rd. AS IN A WEEK FROM TOMORROW! The landlady will probably be fine with it, as the apartment will be completely ready by 7/1, and she was just going to hold it for us until 7/10. So, assuming she does let us move on 7/3, I have a week to have everything cleaned and get packed. Oh, and I have to be out of town tomorrow so I can go with my boyfriend to see/measure the place and shop for furniture (his couch won't fit in the new place, I have no couch, I need an office/desk chair...). So, really, because I'm coming back on Sunday five and a half days (not counting moving day in there b/c obviously I'll be moving that day, not packing/cleaning - I hope).
So... here is what I have to do...
1. laundry (five loads to fold right now; probably five downstairs to wash, too - hopefully not much more to bring down, maybe a load or two - either way, it will be ongoing - probably right up until the day before the move)
2. top of the desk (mostly books, needs to be cleaned off & stuff on top needs to be sorted)
3. dresser drawers (need to be cleaned out)
4. top of the dresser (stuff on there needs to be packed)
5. shelves (need to be emptied, stuff on them sorted, shelves themselves need to be taken apart and cleaned before being packed)
6. closet #2 (#1 is finished; #2 needs to be cleaned out)
7. under the bed (scary! not too much there, but it is probably 2 hours of work)
8. go to landfill (have bunch of trash bagged and ready - but it's too much to fit in my family's trash bins)
9. clean bathroom (the one I share w/ my brother -there isn't much of mine in there, but I still want to be sure I don't leave any mess or stuff behind for anyone else to deal with)
10. clean hallway (I have two bins of stuff in the hallway - need to sort through them)
11. family room (where my clean clothes are b/c I don't have much extra space in my room right now - also where my school stuff is and where I stash Goodwill bags until I have enough to make a donation trip. It's not very messy but still need to pack clothes, go through other stuff & pack or toss, and will end up making at least one more Goodwill run - have four bags right now)
12. Pack. Other than the stuff on the dresser, the clothes, and a desk (which I disassembled and which is sitting in the family room w/ school stuff), there isn't much - but need to get all of that packed.
Other than that, I have dinner with one friend and a dentist appointment.
12 things, five days... I can do that, right?

yes you can, if you manage to do 2 and a half things per day.
I recommend taking 3 or 4 of the easier things and lumping them into one day, and getting them done first. That way you can focus on the harder things.

Thanks, you guys! I got the laundry folded, packed my clean clothes into 3 boxes, and went through the stuff on the table in the family room. I'm gonna try to get a few hours of sleep before I have to leave, but if I'm not asleep in 45 minutes, I'm going to clean off the desk instead.

well, you might find this unhelpful, but consider that you don't HAVE to go shopping for a couch and desk before you move in. it wouldn't be impossible to live without a couch for a while- and if you NEED a desk you can use the kitchen table for a while. you guys wouldn't die without a couch for a week, so you can put off shopping til later. then you have an extra day. you can sit on chairs, the floor, the bed.
I lived without a couch for a year because I knew if i got the wrong one, I'd be stuck with it anyway for years. I eventually got myself a leather couch for $100 off craigslist which was the right type for having a dog and random untrained foster dogs and also the right price for me.

Wow Good luck with this move next week. Looks like you have a good "stash and dash" plan list-to-do already. I would agree that you don't need a couch right away. When I moved from my old house to my condo, I got rid of my old couch before moving. I used some nice old side chairs and my rocking chair for a few months. Took time then to decide on a couch, and bought a very nice one a few months later that is perfect. Might be a good idea to get that stuff to goodwill and landfill right away - get it out.

suggestions:
skip the laundry. Do that after you move. Assuming nothing is damp and you have enough clothes & linens.
if the dresser & desk goes with you: purge what you do not want out of the drawers. Leave in them what goes with you. When you move, take out the drawers, put the dresser/desk on the truck, put the drawers (with contents) back in & reverse on arrival. I never box furniture drawer contents.
come back & clean your empty space after you move out. Much easier.
Hugs! Enjoy your new life! mouseanne

Just DON'T tape the drawers shut while in the truck. My 'helpful' friends did that & I had to live with adhesive on several furniture items for years afterward. Strategic placement of something to hold the drawers closed is much better.
Yes, you CAN do this. Prioritize. Re-prioritize as time gets shorter. Do the most important stuff first. Low priority stuff can be filler or wait to the end. Purchasing a new couch is really a low priority task, as has already been mentioned.
Sorting through the stuff before you move is a good idea, because it's a waste to move it and then throw it out. BUT, if time is short, put that on your low priority list and try and get to it. Otherwise, you really can do that in the new apartment.
Congratulations on finding the apartment.

You can do this, but please don't half kill yourself to do it. Make sure you take breaks and take care of yourself.

It is like Star Trek - you will hit the time space continuum and get it all accomplished because you have to!

Thanks, everybody for the encouragement and suggestions! Just fyi, it wasn't that I thought shopping for the couch was more important than cleaning (I'd be ok without a couch for a while), but since I was going to be there (the town I'm moving to) all day anyway, it made sense to get that done if we could. My furniture (dresser, desk, bed) isn't coming with me. It is antique and heavy and not at all my style (plus, my boyfriend has a bed & 2 dressers, one of which I can use). I did buy a desk from someone on Craigslist in May; that one is coming & is disassembled & sitting in my family room, just waiting to be packed. Laundry is caught up for now; if it looks like I will have to choose between packing clean clothes & getting something else (the closet, for example) done, I will definitely bring the dirty clothes & wash them after moving. I hadn't thought of that; I appreciate the suggestion! Got my boyfriend's books & DVDs packed. He can get everything else himself this week. Got home about an hour ago. Getting started!
