In my living room is the big window and on another wall are two small windows high up about 20 inches by 24 inches-- we had blinds on these windows for years and due to heighth and position they have always been annoying to clean---I have to stand on a high stool to dust and then have to take them down at least twice a year to wash in the tub- well today I took them down and tossed them into the tub--- of course they are the metal ones which will outlast me --- and suddenly decided that I am not hanging them up again---the windows are high enough that no one can see in and also a good light source on dull days so I did wash the blinds and I will use one for the bathroom to replace an ugly faded one that is not metal and the other---I will think about for now= I will toss out the faded one for sure-
this made me think about how often do we keep using something out of habit even though it has long outlasted its welcome--- need I say that these blinds did not even match the big window blinds as we had to replace the big ones years ago and they did match then--- Am I the only one who does wonder things like this and if not--- tell your story and lets let go of things kept by habit rather than necessity- some time this week I will create some matching curtains that do not require dusting or tub washing-----no more wild climbing for Meme

Yes Meme, I think we all are programmed to do things "as we've always done them" without thinking about it. Sometimes it takes an epiphany (is that the right word?) to realize that you don't HAVE to do it that way. Or someone may come over and say why are you doing that--and in trying to define it you realize that there isn't a good reason.
I can't think of anything recent but I know that my mother had the habit of never turning on the oven unless there were multiple things to cook--I think it was to save money in not having to heat up the oven for one thing. So she would cook a couple of dishes for dinner, then afterwards have a cake ready to bake. It took me a few years of living by myself before I realized that I could turn the oven on, bake one thing, then shut it off. When I really thought about it she probably saved a penny's worth of gas by not having to heat the oven up twice!!
And I still fold towels the way she did even though she folded them kind of oddly to fit into a narrow linen cabinet we had--it's just habit now!

As Shakespeare asked, what "makes us rather bear those ills we have / Than fly to others that we know not of?"
This is a good reminder to stop and think about why we do things certain ways, and change if we don't like the answer.

Habits - it is all habits - I used to fold towels for the same reason and people thought it was so odd - I thought everyone did it a certain way like that - - now I do things my own way. I have read that just changing your furniture around or simple changes can change the energy in a home.
