I have yucky spots or shall I call them former spills on my carpet that weren't cleaned up properly. My question is should I try to spot clean them or will that make the rest of the carpet look worse? With my back problems lately I'm not up to renting a rub cleaning machine. Any suggestions?

This may sound odd, but you may want to just leave them for now. Get the areas you want the carpet cleaned 100% desqualored, to the point the furniture can be moved, and call in a professional. It doesn't cost too much more than renting a machine, especially if you're only doing one or two rooms, and they got out stains on my carpet that I thought would never, ever budge the last time I allowed them in, including tire tread marks from when I was storing my bike indoors.

You may want to try a spot and see how it turns out. Just remember to rinse well with water and then put a towel down and do a victory dance to get all of the moisture you can up. I rather like this.

If and when you can afford it and let someone into the house, get a Chem-Dry professional team in to do it for you. I was amazed at what they were able to get out of the carpet. I didn't even know what the stains were and thought I'd have to replace the carpet, but it looked like a brand new carpet when they were done. They did my living room, the stairs and upstairs hall for only $80.00.
