saying they left a can that was too heavy for me to reduce the weight and they would get it next week. I was surprised by this but I put my thinking cap on and got the can into my van and took it to the new home where the dumpster behind my house was entirely empty so I unloaded can into dumpster.....smart I think....anyway now I have a quick alternative to waiting for Friday trash pick up. I can haul it down to the dumpster behind my house and dump it in there leaving me a can to refill with more of the junk from basement.....the can by the way that was too heavy was full of college books, notebooks ect.....I could not pick it up with the dumpster lid in hand and dump it so I did the next best thing....emptied by hand...lift and toss....

actually i have often thought of what might be too heavy for cans/garbage trucks. I have alot of cat litter to get rid of, so i'm breaking it into chunks, each of the litter is in its separate bag but each bag probably weighs 10 lbs or so.. give or take, i figure one a week into the trash can will eliminate the litter, and keep the can light enough that it can be emptied.

You are smarter than the average bear Yogi! Double the trash pickup! That should speed things along nicely!

5 or 6 encyclopedi- type books seems to be a good maximum to put out in the garbage. More than that, and it really makes the can too heavy when you add up the other stuff.
Usually I try to put the books into paper recycling, but they don't like us to throw copious amounts, mostly just one or two at a time.

I'm so glad you got this solved, BTT!
Most of our garbage goes into the can that is picked up by the lift arm on the truck itself, no need to worry about a person having to lift it. We do get once a week pick up of other stuff, but if it is very large or heavy stuff, they use a "cherry picker" as Sweetie calls it. So we get to pretty easily dispose of everything.
As for books, well, we have a university friends of the library group that will take anything still readable and put it in their annual book sale. You would be amazed at what people buy there.

I got rid of a set of encyclopedias by dumping them one at a time in various store's trash cans. The first book emotionally I could not do, so I had my girlfriend dump it for me. It took less than two weeks to get rid of them this way.

Hey BTT! Sounds like you are lightening your load! Very nice!I peek through my blinds on trash day- worried that my trash cans will be too heavy for them to dump out. (these things are packed)
