Over the past few months I have literally purged thousands of things from our home....and it has been really hard for me to do as it goes against the grain to throw things out. I have grown up being taught to hold onto things, to always look for a reason to keep things, so each time I took my things to the charity store I felt a bit shaky and even teary leaving some of them. However it occurred to me that as the house becomes emptier of things, instead of feeling poorer through having less, I am actually feeling richer! Could it be that when you get rid of stuff, you actually become more prosperous? With every load of things I have got rid of, I feel lighter and more at peace with myself. I feel more positive about our future and more in control of my life.

Dear Mrs. Mess,
Yes! Yes! Yes!
If you are grasping with tight hands, nothing will leave, but you will also have no way for new things to flow in.
If you continually give, you will continually have.
Luke 6:38 "Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full--pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back." (Thank you, MellowYellow for quoting that on your blog and reminding me of it. Great timing.)
Keep giving, Mrs. Mess. I have said for years, you can always go to the charity shop to visit your stuff if you ever miss it, and see the 3 others on the shelf just like it. Best of all, they are storing it for you!
If you find you need something, because you have given so much, it will be provided for you.
A wonderful thread.

Congratulations on reaching the concept of what we're all trying to achieve. I finally started living by the one in, one out rule since I started here and now it's 2nd nature. I did however just purchase a microwave and I have a perfectly good one. I bought it for one of my CNA's as a housewarming gift since she had to exit her home with nothing but clothing and her DD's bedroom furniture due to an abusive marriage. The microwave was a surprise and a small token to help her start out anew. I guess this is my contribution in regards to giving. SNM

Yes it is strange to feel lighter and more at peace when purging things. I found out that a great local church is having thier annual "Garage Sale" next weekend. This sale always draws a crowd and is successful. Yesterday I took two nice big wooden crates of books, to donate. I liked those books, but I just have toooo many around here, and haven't read these in years. I sorted what I wanted to donate, and asked my friend if she would like some of them, and she took a few. I was glad to get those two crates of books out of here. And, after I moved them, I saw how dusty they and the crates and the carpet under them were!! wow. I dusted them and the crates. They are gone. Now, a nice clear space, vaccumed and looking nice. My cat investigated and sniffed around that clean space. Won't be missing those books; I used to have a very hard time giving any books away. But I am willing to sort, give away now.
I am not planning to go to the sale. Enough stuff. A sale like this would previously have been irresistable; I am now avoiding garage/estate/flea market sales.

Not only can you feel richer but in many cases you can actually BE richer. (not talking about spiritual riches here, which of course last forever and are the best riches) but you need less space to keep the stuff, $$ saved, smaller place to live no need for renting storages you can fix problems right away, which 99% of the time is cheaper than having to replace the thing or replace flooring etc from water leaking, just one example you can SEE what you do have, so you don't buy duplicates, or triplicates??? you can sell houses, cars, stuff for more when they are clean, (talking about squalor here not clutter really)
cheers!! congrats!!! to you

I drive past garage sales/flea markets/thrift shops, etc. I pretend it's five years later, my house is clean and I don't need any more junk. If I want a book, I have plenty and besides, I have a library card.
