i've been thinking lately of how money affects us in different ways in our various problems. i see how those of us with significant disposable income can be tempted to buy too much with it.
for me, i've only recently gotten some new appliances. i'm in my forties and have NEVER had appliances, bathtub, etc. newer than twenty years old. most have been seriously fourty.
i am AMAZED at how easy they are to clean. and how inspired i am to keep them that way. they are not chipped. a rag wipes them off as there are not thirty years of crevices beaten into it where the dirt sticks with a vengenance.
i can literally do in five seconds what would take me five minutes before. i am not doing it more often or better. LESS OFTEN actaully in some cases. but since i've got a clean slate, it's amazing how EASY it is. and again, just the inspiration of it looking nice.
before, no matter what i did, most of my stuff was never going to look nice, or actually even clean. this is very refreshing. i wish i had had this opportunity before now. but now i KNOW.
i will keep my new things looking as good as possible and have more sympathy with my efforts toward my old stuff.

here I was thinking of the hoarder who can and does buy everything keeping stacks of stuff in their homes.....but you took a nice tac with this thread...I am wanting to buy some new furniture now that I have security the dog will not be chewing it to pieces because I am locking him in another part of house where he can access the outside and not the stuff beyond the kitchen....so yes I want nice stuff like either leather couch or loveseat or that microfiber suede stuff....it will look oh so good to get noticeably nicer furniture...my kitchen is holding old now stuff...stove is 11yrs old...washer dryer same age...dishwasher somewhere near there...the new is the fridge and the wall mounted microwave...they had to be replaced from original purchases...sold the fridge when thought I had to move before and microwave had issues of cracks in the seals.....so it got tossed. never had thought of how nice the newer stuff is but yes my fridge can be cleaned easy and is nice when cleaned....

i've learned something else. flylady used to say to shine your sink. i have followed her advice, when i was able, to wipe it out. i do know it makes it better. but now i UNDERSTAND. when it is new, it REALLY makes a difference. not just emotionally cause i know i did a good job but GEE. it's SHINY. its pretty even.

Proof that, if you do get to replace something, it is easier to keep up than to catch up.

We lived in an apartment for 14 years before we bought our house, and my attitude towards cleaning is so much healthier. I think that while we were in the apartment there was an attitude of, "no matter what I do it will still look like crap so why bother," whereas in the house everything is new and bright (and mine!) and there is more incentive to keep it that way. It is so much easier to keep up than catch up!

It easier to keep up than to catch up. Unfortunately for me no matter where we live I'll probably be playing catch up for years to come still. *sigh* Gotta love kids. >.<

one good thing is, as you begin to change, they will too. not over night, but they really do mimic our behaviors more than we realize.
i decided something this morning. my new place came with an appliance i know i won't use. i have something else i use instead. i think i will sell it, prolly for not much as it is older but it does work, even twenty five bucks woud be cool. becuase other wise it wil sit here for ten years, i will use it as a table and everyone who comes through will go, you don't use that thing? btdt so, SELL THE DARN THING.

I also agree! I have always had cars that were not so great. So I never kept up with oil changes, keeping the car clean etc. Well last year I bought myself a nice new car for once!! I'd like to report there isnt a peice of trash in it...I've kept up with all maintenance, and even regularly vaccum, and wash it. Having something new and fresh is definatley incintive to keep it clean. Congratulations on your new appliances and being able to keep them clean!
