Colin always rips up plastic bags and destroys 6-pack holders for just that reason, and he got me doing it years ago too. I rarely throw away any jar or bottle without its top, unless it's going to recycling.

I remember years ago finding a dead gull on a beach in rural Alaska that had become trapped in a plastic 6 pack holder.

aww poor little cub! glad to hear they got the jar off in time. Don't you know that poor thing was terrified for all that time? It's heartbreaking. But a happy ending.

MISC, I've always torn or cut apart six pack plastic, but it never occurred to me to cut plastic bags. Not using that many of them these days, but I'll remember to cut them when I do throw them out. I'm primarily using cloth bags for grocery shopping these days. If I'm just buying one or two items, I'll carry them or stick them in my purse.
I'm also refusing straws at restaurants ... plastic comes from petroleum (which is scarce) and stays intact in landfills for practically forever.
Litter such as candy wrappers, gum wrappers, broken balloons etc. is a danger to many species of birds. They are attracted to the bright color and eat the trash, then it lodges in their stomachs and they can't get nutrition from other food sources. WestsideStory

it is good to bend cans in also as animals often get these stuck on heads-- bend both sides so can is almost flat and animal cannot get into it-- I also rinse cans just to make sure all food and smell is gone--- I have been double bagging and waiting to put garbage out as this area has a lot of roaminig cats and they sure can make a mess plus the danger-
