Looked in freezer of fridge - started sorting - have several old foil wrapped packages of mystery meat - Prob a year old - tossed out - I know wasteful but it just didn't look good. Had 4 bags of Talapia - there are usually 4 or 5 pieces in each bag.- 2 open - consolidated the 2 open - and I won't be buying any of that until it is all used up! I know I have bought them in the last 2 to 3 months - and they are frozen so safe to eat. Tossed out some sausage/biscuit things too - been in there awhile and oh so full of fat! Grocery visit this week will be mostly salad, veggies and fresh fruit.

I'm constantly buying too much, and it goes bad before I can eat it all. Not wasting the food means more trips to the store, which I really, really don't like, but it has to be done.

Here's something I learned from our chef when we had the restaurant:
Buy some masking tape & a permanent marker. Use them to label what goes into the fridge & freezer. It helps me so much knowing what's in those containers of leftovers. Dating them helps, too. So now, everything gets labeled & if it's going into the freezer, it also gets dated.
Then when it's time to take something out to thaw, I know how long ago I put it in there.

This is what I taught my granddaughter when she lived with me-- my fridge manual says on rule 977 that all left-overs must go in fridge and not be used with in the allotted 3 day safety factor-- they must stay in there longer than the 3 days so they qualify as science projects-- after that they can stay there from one to 3 or 4 weeks depending on what you are studying---then remember to put them in a wholly garbage bag so that you then will follow the garbage can manual rule number 65 which states your garbage can needs to smell--- also note that leftovers move to the back of the fridge so when you are looking for something to eat you will not see them in time to eat them in the allotted time-- and if you note your stove manual rule 55 states that you must always cook enough to have left overs but never enough so as to be able to use these leftovers in tomorrows meal- freezers too have manual rules which should be followed so that one has something to add to the wholly garbage bag and be heavy so as to cause the holes to enlarge enough so you have to use another bag-- written by Meme who has temporary insanity at times and reads manual books too carefully I hope u enjoy------- hugs PS my spell check says I misspelled wholly but my manuals spell it that way--

Looked in freezer of fridge - ........ - tossed out - I know wasteful but it just didn't look good. Good job! Freezer/fridge: When in doubt, throw it out! Food poisoning can be very serious (even deadly)-- and much more expensive than the original cost of any food item!

i've been keeping a list of what's frozen on the freezer and then crossing it off as i go through stuff, esp as i do lots of homecooking so no obvious packaging. i don't get everything crossed everytime but it keeps me knowing with in about twenty percent what the stuff is in there.

Meme! Too funny. Great job in cleaning out the mysteries! I love having the freezer all clean. I have not kept much in my freezer since the move. Going through and planning meals with what is in there at least once a week. Keeps it from getting out of control. The masking tape and permanent marker is what we use, too. Great way to keep track. No more mystery meat here. Well not in the freezer anyway.
