I was going to get ham salad last week at store since dd was to eat here - but they were out - the clerk told me they were changing brands - so didn't have any - well I zip there tonight and they had it - same brand - same price - but a 12 ounce container not a 16 ounce container. Do they think we are too dumb to figure that out? I bought it anyway - actually I don't mind the lesser amount - 16 ounces was too much to eat in 3 days anyway - but I resent them just playing games like that. Some times the canners use the same size can and put less in them - and of course people don't notice really. Stuck to my veggie and fresh fruit for the most part too.

What really ticks me off is how expensive laundry soap is now! They put that b.s. on the label saying how its 2x as concentrated or whatever. BUT I dont beleive it for a second.
I've given up on Tide and now buy Era, it smells almost as good as Tide, and is much cheaper.

I am guessing you bought the ham salad that was prepackaged....me we have deli here where you can select things like that and tell them how much you wish by weight....I did that last week with German Potato salad and also got a special type of salad that they made which I had never had before but he let me taste it and it seemed tasty and healthy so I bought it....small amount for one meal....little more potato salad than I needed but I love German Potato salad...so I got I think 1/2 lb and ate it in one sitting with the salad and couple balogna sandwiches....

Yes, often instead of raising the price they cut the portion size. Look at bars of soap, too, how they often have curves, and the letters trimmed in deeper, and the edges beveled -- all to make the amount they give you a bit less and hoping you won't notice.

It has been a long time since coffee came in pounds.

I noticed that Noxema recently created new packaging, which is a couple of ounces smaller for the same price. And because it's my only facial cleanser, I've always wished they sold it in larger bulk containers so I could just refill the smaller container and stop wasting money on packaging. But they don't.
Re: the laundry soap: That's one reason to make your own. It's much cheaper per wash and VERY EASY to make your own. The same is true of dishwasher soap. Cheap and even easier to make.
I don't think they think we're stupid. I think they're trying to make a profit.

The cat food I used to buy was 6lbs then 5, now it is 4.5. Really? We are supposed to be so dumb we don't notice! Here is my tip for the day: I have learned to look online for coupons. I have found several for the cat litter I use including a rebate for a free bag! I have three $2.00 off coupons for the cat and dog food. Some companies have the "reward for loyal customers" rebate forms. Just look online.

Actually, most people use too much laundry soap and dishwasher detergent. You can use less and still get good results (better, really, because your clothes don't have soap residue in them). I love that they put the price breakdown on the stickers now. I like to be able to see that one product is 4.7 cents per ounce vs. another at 5.3 cents per ounce without doing math, because math breaks my brain.

Ah, tales of the dreaded Grocery Store Shrink Ray. So common it gets a near daily write-up on Consumerist.
The one that ticks me off most is the fried chicken dinners you buy at the deli counter. When I was a kid, the cheapest one had 8 pieces - 2 breasts, 2 thighs, 2 drumsticks, 2 wings. Now, it's still 8 pieces, but it's either 4 thighs and 4 drumsticks or (in a couple stores I've gone to) 4 thighs and 4 wings! Overall, it's less meat for eating, even if it is the good stuff... (I am a shameless dark meat ***.)

My other great gritch about this is that they often downsize to a size that isn't convenient.
Yogurt now comes in 6 oz containers rather than 8oz. Now I can live with eating 2oz less when I have a yog - but a couple recipes I use call for 2 cups of yog so i either end up having to supplement it with something else (if I open 2 containers) or having a bit to store/eat/dump if I decide to use 3 containers.
Heck, just charge a few cents more and gimme my d****m 8 oz in ONE container please!

Deli doesn't have ham salad - that is a small town for you.
I don't have a printer so can't print coupons.
I ditto using too much soap/detergent - most people in the world don't have these things at all.

i dont understand what is so great about liquid laundry det. pwd disolves quite well, you are putting it in to gallons of water! the water costs more to ship and it is heavier to carry home, too.
Anyone have trouble hitting the mark on those clear plastic measuring caps when filling with the spigot container? I put my thumb on the line I want to use, then when i can see the det touching my thumb, I stop filling.

I remember ,when I was a kid. One can of tuna was enough to make 4 sandwiches. I think a can of tuna used to be 7 or 7 and one-half ounces. Now it's 5 oz. So now I only get 2 sandwiches from a can. And look at ice cream. Used to be able to buy a full half-gallon block (that's 8 cups). Now it's only seven cups and the price has gone up a lot. Plus it's "churned" with air.

i love the calculator on my cell phone- I used it to calculate cost per amount, then am extremely brand non loyal and buy what's on sale.
tide is ridiculously expensive. but that double concetrated thing is TRUE. they used to add more water. i buy a few brands that are a third of the price of tide, when on sale (and one of the 3 are always on sale) they don't even sell powder detergent anymore in my store. i do remember getting little pockets of powder not dissolved in the "clean" clothes...but that was when I was about 13, maybe I was putting too much/ doing the laundry wrong.

Powder detergent can really mess up washers - it tends to not dissolve or it cakes back up and can stick to the tub internally and in between stuff and corrodes the mechanisims. If you use it you should put it in a container and really make it dissolve first - but it still may come back together later inside washer. It will also stick inside the hose - outgoing. Actually most people don't have their clothes get dirty enough to use alot of detergent - detergent breaks down the fibers and fades stuff too. Personally the scented stuff irritates my skin and really that is what most people are buying it for - the scent.
