Hmmmm.....this is a good thread. I see that I have all of the fears mentioned above, except the ones about kids (regular and furry) since I don't have any. So, I'm feeling like cleaning....so I don't have to have those fears any more. (They make me so tired.)

I am fearing earthquakes more than usual lately. Which is why I am thinning out my books, to get rid of tall bookcases ASAP.

I had a similar situation as Stuffnomore, in that I had unexpected "visitors." Only I wasn't given the option of taking care of business outside. You see, when my husband died, it was under questionable circumstances and investigators were called in. To make a long and sad story short, immediately after I was notified of my husband's death, I was taken to my house and asked to open my door to two deputy sheriffs, four homicide detectives, a victim's rights advocate, a handful of relatives, and a partridge in a pear tree. There was no shutting doors and hiding stuff; they were there for evidence. No room was off limits.
Now that things have started to settle down, I think back to that day and I am so glad that I have been in maintenance mode and I have a regular cleaning lady. I can not imagine how much more awful that ordeal would have been, how much more work it would have been for the investigators to find what they needed, had the house not been clean and clutter-free.

For me it is the knock on the door, or something needing repair. Our water heater died 2 months ago, and we lived with no hot water for a week. I kept assuring my husband that I would get the front room and dining area clean enough for the land lord to come and replace it, but his patience ran out before we could clean enough of it to overcome my fear. He sent me to my best friends, told the land lord we had a disaster in the house and assured him we would have it clean soon. He came and replaced the water heater, but we were asked to move 2 months later. i can't help but think that the request for us to move was because of the squalor in the home. i have to say I love my husband for dealing with the shame and embarassment, but I still live in dread of the knock on the door. I am in the process of cleaning up now, so we can move. I have decided I will NEVER live in squalor again!! I am getting rid of everything that is not a necessity. My mother lives in a home with things stacked from floor to ceiling. She DOES not have trash scattered around, one difference from my home. I am working on my husband too. Yesterday, i fixed hm some oatmeal for breakfast. He finished and started to set the dirty paper bowl down on a counter and then looked at me walked 3 steps and put it in the garbage. We both did a happy dance, hugged and went on about our days. For me it is getting rid of stuff, finding a home for the stuff I must have and then putting things away and throwing things away. My husband is as bad as me, so we are working on this together.

I'm with a lot of you in fearing a knock on the door, a friendly neighbor, my landlord, a repair person.
My worst fear is my husband's family "dropping by" particularly his sister. She's "Miss Perfect" and extremely opinionated...

I'm petrified of vermin. We had mice in the old house - they literally paralyzed me into doing NOTHING with my squalor for several months. Before that it was silverfish. Amazingly we never had roaches.
The new house hasn't had any bugs and it's been clean enough that I wouldn't expect any. But being an old house in an old neighborhood we do see the occasional big cockroach that works its way in. EEK! But I don't have that paralyzing fear like I used to.

Oh and how could I forget knocks on the door. When the house is bad I don't even open the front blinds, and I'm petrified of anyone coming by.
Frequent visitors are a great incentive for me to keep things from getting out of hand. We literally didn't have anyone come into our old house for months at a time.
CPS was also a huge fear of mine. I have a relative whose kids were actually taken from them, sustained level 4 squalor being one of many reasons.

I haven't read this thread until today.
All of us people afraid of a knock on the door is really sad. Yes, me too--freezing when I hear the knock so I don't make any sound and the person will think I'm not home. SAD!
We all owe it to ourselves to get moving and get our places into a state where we're comfortable in our own homes! This just gives me added morivation to get moving on the last of my clutter--thanks for this thread!
