When I work, I mark what I do in various increments. When I was just starting, there was so much to do and I was resisting greatly, I used '5 minutes minimum' as my goal. I just needed to get started and I knew I could stomach that little time and quit if I wanted.
Now that I'm more into again, I no longer think in terms of small amounts of time (minutes or hours), but rather numbers of garbage cans I get rid of. This can be recycling, trash, goodwill, etc. Just total amounts out of the house. I now prefer to work without looking at the clock at all and losing myself in the work.
There are also longer term time goals - days or weeks or specific approaching events (Aunt Martha's visit) or holidays. I use these kinds of goals too.
Another parameter for gaging accomplishments might be working on specific areas or rooms. The floor, counter, dining table, etc. Or entire rooms.
Right now my combo increments are # 'cans out' plus the longer horizon of 'the holidays are approaching'.
What do you find works best for you?

I have been doing this for years and still haven't gotten beyond 10 minute increments! They have to be broken up for me, even if it's only by 5 minutes on the computer, then another 10 minutes, etc. And I do use a timer. The exception is if I get into a particular project and I get engrossed in it--like the closets I've cleaned out--then I just keep going til I'm done and don't even realize how much time is passing.

Oh my dear goodness. Somehow I misread this title and saw it reading, "In what excrements do you work?" I thought you were talking about, "What kind of pets do you deal with". And "what sort of mess do you clean up with your pets" Duh!

For household tasks I tend to be more task than time oriented, but they're all small things: start a load of laundry; make the bed; empty the dishwasher; empty the trash cans. I do one small thing, goof off for a while, then do another. I'm somewhat limited by arthritis, so I can't do a lot all at once. This way, nothing gets overwhelming, and I can usually get whatever I choose to do finished in one go-round. If it's something I can do while seated, like prepping dinner or polishing the silver, I can do things that take longer.

And "what sort of mess do you clean up with your pets" Duh! , omg that happens to me all the time. I think I might need glasses. When I first started here I would work in ten minute increments, took lots of computer breaks. Now I'm doing thirty minutes of work/ 15 rest. Sometimes I start with the "only 15 minutes" but I get into what I'm doing. This does not mean that I do this everyday or even all day, I'm still working on that.

When I feel like working in time increments it's usually 2-3 minutes (commercial breaks).
Otherwise I go one garbage bag at a time.

I usually start in 15 minute increments. But once I get rolling, I don't look at the clock. I just keep going.. getting started is the hard part for me and if I can do a couple 15 minute cycles, im usually motivated at that point and can do more.

Getting started is the hardest part for me too. I try to do just one thing - clear the sink, or swish the toilet, or put away one type of thing in one room. Often this gets me motivated to do other things in that room. I might work for 2 minutes or 2 hours.

I usually do about an hour of work with an half hour rest followining - sometimes depending what I am doing the work time is less -- but I get a lot done this way and it works good with my health issues--- yesterday I was able to rest all day because I have been maintaiining so a day off is now ok-- I was able to catch up today - I don't think of it as work so much anymore -- hugs Meme

That sums it up for me too! I suppose it depends on the job, the urgency, and my mood. Sometimes I work to fill a bin bag. Sometimes I collect rubbish while waiting for the toaster or kettle. Sometimes I set aside 3 minutes, sometimes it's 30 minutes, or anything in between. So, yeah, job + urgency + mood = particular incremement.
