Okay, so I have had a home of complete squalor for about 5 years. We are moving at the end of October. i have really been working on my apartment and have made great strides. BUT.... I have the whole month of October to move items to the new place. I am trying to only keep essential items and I am having no problems at all throwing things away, but when it comes to finding homes for stuff in my new place I am paralysed. I don't know how to be organized. I am so afraid I will just end up with stacks of stuff everywhere, I keep putting off taking things to the new place. any one else have this happen?

Are you just talking about "things", like in drawers, closets etc or furniture also?
Start with what has worked in the past? Go thru the process of using things. Unload dishes in the dishwasher, where? Where will they be used? Sheets, towels, Designate a shelf etc, and ONLY whats supposed to go there get to be there! Nothing else. You say you have no problem throwing things away, as you open boxes in the new place, some things will stand out as not being needed, wanted anymore. Get rid of those things. Any books out there about "setting up housekeeping"? Good luck Wonderful opportunity for a fresh start!!!
go! dazy go!!

Dazymae, what type of things are you havng trouble finding a place for? I'm guessing there will be some things that are obvious, like your clothing will go in your bedroom closet and dresser. Which things are you having trouble deciding about?
I think that as long as you put things in the room where they will be most used, you will be safe. Put them on shelves or in cabinets, if you start living there and find out the places don't work, you can move them around one at a time. But in the meantime you won't be just dumping everything any which place so that you have a big mess.
It's great that you have a month to move, that should be so much easier than trying to do it all in a day!

Good suggestion. When you are moving into a new place, there really is no good way to know where to put everything so the daily flow will be good. You'll only find that out after living in a place for a while. Accept that your initial decisions of where to put things will change no matter what.
At least that is what happened when we moved into this current house. I put away things the best I could, thinking we would do this or that here and there, but there was no way to really know how our daily activities would be. Most was OK, at least basic room assignments, but over time many shelves and drawers' contents have been shifted around and put to different use than I first imagined.
I totally understand your concern. Good luck to you.

Oh, I love to move! I envy you with your fresh start. Donate and toss as much as possible beforehand, and yes, you will open a box in the new place and think "I don't want these, either." Just because you moved them doesn't mean you have to keep them. Continue to donate and toss.
