Last night I observed in myself some messy habits that when done, are just unconscious actions. For example, at the height of my squalor and depression I would place/throw things on the ground next to my couch instead of getting up and putting them away or in the garbage. I've come leaps and bounds in the last few years but I still catch myself doing that same behavior after the fact. Yesterday I got up and brought a cup to the kitchen, when I went back to the couch I saw a spoon and used paper towel on the floor( My floor is now clear) I know I put them there just don't remember doing that. I've even placed things down and the second I do it, become aware and correct the habit. I had a conversation with a friend who is a music teacher and mentioned that even though I haven't taken piano lessons in over 20 years, there's certain songs I can still play- I can't read sheet music anymore. She referred this as "muscle memory". I still have a lot a "muscle memory" with my actions around the house. Has anyone else noticed this?
best, artsy

Same here - exact same behavior. I've just put things on the floor next to where I am sitting all my life. In fact I was marvelling this morning that the floor to the right of me now, next to the computer, has a mound of stuff that has grown since I totally had the it cleared not that long ago. I guess I just dont notice such things here, ......though I sure wouldnt do that when visiting someone else's house.

Yep, the good old putting things on the floor habit. That's my worst.
Not putting laundry away, leaving it in bags in my trunk, and pulling out one set of clothes per day, or leaving them in a bag on the floor, where they all get out and get mixed with the dirty laundry which is now going on the floor.
I'm trying to think of more that are squalor related....
oh yes, leaving trash in my car until it piles up like a literal dumpster, that's a good one.

Mine is not putting things away after getting something to eat. I'm not consciously planning to leave it til later, I honestly don't even think of until I come back in the kitchen or dining room and see the food containers and utensils sitting out. I guess my mind is so focused on the food that everything else fades into the background! And I noticed that the messier things are the more likely I am to leave things out. The cleaner things are, the more likely that I notice things out of place and fix them right away. Diane

I've caught myself being messy, undisciplined and unstructured, careless , just like I was raised in a barn or something. These things are the exact opposite of the things that I want for me and my family.

mine for the most part I just noticed it is not related to messyness but I pick my left thumb with index finger all the time...plus I bite my nails constantly....
as for a messyness habit that is not really broken yet I just put dishes in my sink...it has been better here in new home and I have not gotten to where there was kitchen sink goo pudding as someone called it on chat yesterday...but it has been that way for years...just set dishes in sink...now I am getting them into dishwasher pretty fast and running it pretty frequently...yeay on that...

throwing/putting everything on the floor. putting things on any available surface "for now".
doing weird stuff (all kinds) because I'm in a hurry when no hurry really exists (just my impatience with regular rules of life)

For putting stuff on the floor/throwing trash on the floor, i solved that problem by placing trash cans in the "hotspots" the areas that i would most often throw items... that way if they got thrown, they'd hit a trashcan and not the floor.

paper squalor is still a huge problem for me. I find myself putting paid bills etc.. all in the same drawer, at the end of the week I now try to shred them... because a month of paper squalor is a pain in the you know what. A week can easily be shredded in a matter of 5 minutes.

When I drop something accidentally I still have to force myself to pick it up right away.

I also never put away projects of any sort I've just been working on.
Doesn't matter if they are finished or not, or how much space they take, out they sit....

1. This habit of putting things in my bedroom to deal with later, much, much later,.. so overwhelmed with it, right now I have piles upon piles of clean clothes to put away, stuff to donate in a corner, stuff I can't make up my mind about, and clothes to be ironed, there is visible dust everywhere.. bags of trash, too many books, gah- not helping my asthma at all. 2. Another bad habit of mine is leaving dirty dishes in the sink over the weekend, usually starts by Thursday-- by Monday morning it's a grimm sight. 3.cleaning and maintaining bathrooms, I end up doing everything but.. this is my most challenging bad habit.

I don't know if it's a bad habit per se, but I just DON'T SEE THINGS! If things start to drift anywhere, I just don't notice that it's happening, even when there is lots of it, or if I see that spot often. A friend asked for a ride to lunch today. I said 'sure' thinking it would only take a minute or two to clear the front seat of the car. Yikes, good thing I started cleaning the car early this morning ----I filled 3+ full boxes of drifted crap from the right front seat and foot space. I see that side of the car everytime I use that car, but just didnt SEE it. I had no idea so much was there... It just didn't register...... Same thing happens inside the house.
