Congratulations all who had a success making a call or many. just found this thread me too I have a long list of procrastinated things that involve ph calls and people. Yesterday I picked up my repaired car. Damaged 26 dec. The reason for the delay - me making the call to put in the claim. While its admirable all those sorting many things ... I can't envisage starting another procrastinated flow just now. No matter how pressing reason says they are. #sigh#

I am so glad I found this thread....I too ,have alot of trouble making phone calls. I am not sure why, or what is has to do with the squalor in my life, but it is troubling. My husband has been trying to support the family doing handyman type work, and I am supposed to be answering the phones and scheduling estimates, confirming that type of thing. I have an outright panic attack when I have to answer or make these calls!! It has really hurt us financially. I too have alot of trouble scheduling drs, etc. Forget about having to deal with bill collectors and the mortgage company! Funny enough, when I was a more functional person I was a secretary, and pretty good at it. Good on the phones and organized with paperwork!! i dont know exactly when things changed but having alot of trouble now. the was a great thread, im glad to see i am not the only one for whom these seemingly simple things cause such anxiety.

Great job on making your phone calls, Charis, sleepymom, & Chris! Great job on calling & picking up your car Wynken! I especially like this: I can do phone calls even if I do get anxious and even if I do cry or feel very nervous. I do not need to let things fester and fail because of my fear -- I can just take care of stuff.

Chris! You did great! Especially with the airline. That was a very hard thing and I would have been the same way with the tears and all. But, like you... as you can tell in my previous posts. I do make myself make those phone calls & know that I can do it... but it still makes me nervous & stressed. Just knowing what I might have to go thru and the experience of previous calls... I seem to do the calls more easily now, though, because I know that I can get through it. I just hate making the calls and my stress/anxiety level is definitely elevated... like a background noise, kinda. Congrats on working that out with the airline!!!

Thanks Cando -- It helps me so much to know that other people feel similar -- in fact I think that's why I was able to get the courage to make these calls -- I had posted once and I had read the posts here and I was beginning to see that I'm NOT the only one. And it gave me strength to press on and deal with it. In the past it cost me a lot of money because I didn't stand up and fight in a different airline situation. This time it feels very good to have stood up and persisted even thru the fear and anxiety!

It gave me strength to push myself and be strong for others and myself.

In one of my more functional times of life, I was a 911 dispatcher! Talk about stress! And now I have a panic attack when my phone rings and I NEVER answer it. I have to work up courage to return the select few calls I do. I hate feeling so inept. I can't clean my house. I can't answer my phone...what good am I?

Good luck with the insurance calls, PaperGrace! You can do it! I got through some more rough phone calls today. Was working on resolving tolltag issues for 1.5 hours!!! Involved many phone calls that were the greatest amount of the time.... I felt exhausted afterwards, but was a positive outcome and glad that I persisted and made myself do it and push until the situation was resolved! (I hate being billed for things that we shouldn't be....... and especially when outrageous fees are tacked on just because they can). I suspect they're are many things that you are good at. Please don't get down and focus on the negatives. After only re-reading one of your posts, I already see that you are a successful shoe smudge remover! CD

I'm another one who has trouble making phone calls. I am amazed and dismayed with the folks who seem to spend most of their days on their cell phones. If I have that much to say that is important, I would rather meet with the person face to face.
I have to make not many, but some phone calls for work. I have noticed that if there is anyway I can take care of the content of the phone calls either with email or meeting in person, I will do that. I have even been marked down on my work evaluations for the phone thing. However, that was with a previous supervisor. I think the evaluation was more a reflection of the bad relationship between the two of us rather than actually being about the phone.
Being reluctant about making phone calls may or may not relate to hoarding. I do think it is an interesting line of investigation to pursue for you psychologist and sociologist type folks in the crowd.
About tech and help lines - I got sick of not getting any real help, that is, even if I could understand what the person way saying through his/her thick accent. That's what got me started on learning IT myself. Now I rarely, if ever, call tech help. It's just an exercise in futility.
Right now I need to call my credit card company about an incorrect double charge. I am even dreading that because I will probably reach a call center in India. I don't have anything against the Indians. I know they're just trying to make a living too. What I resent in supposedly American companies shipping jobs overseas and hiring folks with less than stellar English skills. I can't understand them. They can't understand me. They are using a script and can't or are not allowed to think on their own. Very, very frustrating and a waste of time and money.

Finally took care of Dental Bill. After comparing insurance claims with Dental Statement I found a bill insurance would not cover. Called Insurance company and they said that they would not cover filling the same tooth in a 24 month time period. Today me to call the dentist and see if a mistake was made. Called they researched and my 188.00 dentist bill is now a 0 balance. So glad I pushed myself to get this taken care of. Many times things have fallen through the cracks but not this time.

Here I thought this was a thread about people working with each other via phone, sort of like chat. Being a person who hates phones I passed it by. BUT, I see now that it's a place for support for making those phone calls we dread and put off or even chicken out of. I belong here. Today I had to call Sam's of all the impersonal places and ask them for a favor. They had some shoes that I am now ready and eager to buy but it's like 50 miles round trip to go see if they have them in my size. I was asking a lot. But, by golly, I went ahead and gave it a try, fully expecting to be brushed off however politely. Surprise. They sent someone to look, they were on a fork lift, and sure enough, there was one pair in my size and they are going to hold them for me until tomorrow. Oh happy day, calloo callay. I was so ecstatic that I immediately went and found two pair to donate and feeling very generous I chose two reaaaaaly nice pairs that I only wore a few times and though I still like them and they fit they are never the shoes I choose when I'm heading out. These new shoes will get worn and they will make things in my wardrobe quite spectacular.

I have a problem with making phone calls, and apparently a lot of people feel the same way, so I thought I'd start a support thread
