Chris, I haven't been in a bookstore since the Borders stores closed! I miss them so much. However...tomorrow my senior client's church has their book sale--last year I didn't go, because I didn't think they'd have anything good. My senior client went WAY after it opened and came back with some books that looked really good--so I'm guessing if I go right at opening tomorrow morning I might find some good stuff. I really shouldn't go, but considering that I haven't actually been in any kind of book store or sale in so long, I really would like to. I'll see how I feel about it in the morning. I found out today that Hazel Holt died--she was one of the very few "cozy" authors that I read, she has a series that's a cut above the usual cozy mysteries, even though it does fit into that genre. She was also a friend of one of my favorite authors of all time, Barbara Pym, and wrote a Pym biography. Diane

Hi Diane -- I hope you did get to go in and look at the church book sale. I probably shouldn't buy another book for 10 years ... it's my one weakness but I just enjoy being in book places so much! I'm sorry to hear one of your favorite authors died. That's always really sad. I was so sad when Dr. Wayne Dyer died. He was just amazing - his books and his PBS shows. ~Chris~ PS I thought of you this morning we just came from taking care of my husbands' sisters' dog. He's a big chocolate lab. They are working out of town today and needed the noon time covered so he could go outside and play a few minutes and do his business. It was nice seeing him. He is bigger than my Dads dog, but reminds me of him a lot.

Chris, I did buy some books at the sale, but only 5 for me, and 3 for other people. Total book cost, $4.50--I didn't think that was bad, considering I hadn't been to a book store or sale in many years!

Yes, the book price was $1.00 for a hardcover and 50 cents for a paperback, even a nice trade paperback. They had a good selection too. And, I ended up giving one of my books to my senior client because she expressed an interest in it, and when I got it home and looked at it more carefully I was pretty sure I wouldn't read it any time soon. It was a mystery set during WW II, which sounds perfect for me, but when I looked more carefully I saw it was more espionage than mystery. Not my favorite--I might read it, but I thought it was better to get it to someone who would read it right away--and she will, because she loves spy novels and WW II. I'm trying to change my mentality of having to grab every book and keep them all for myself. So, it was only 4 books for myself. It was fun to look at tables full of books again, I must say! Diane

Diane Wow at those prices that's just awesome!!!! I went to the library today, I hadn't been in so long they had to verify my library card, and they gave me a new one a prettier card with a separate key fob one too. I'd like to be able to find a lot of good paperbacks for like 25 cents or 50 cents each!!!! We do have a nice clearance section at the Half Price Bookstore but you have to be quick!!!! I hope your sister is doing okay? I realized I haven't heard about her in awhile. ~Chris~

Chris, thanks for asking about my sister--I guess I haven't talked much about her since I haven't seen her in so long, and because her situation never changes. She still has to stay very close to home, she's still lonely and overwhelmed, and my BIL's condition stays exactly the same. My sister's health seems to be holding, which is good. She put up a few Christmas decorations this year, which is also good--up until last year, she lost interest in that completely for a few years, after really enjoying the holiday season prior to that.
I have to make sure I don't wait so long to visit her again, even though I had good reasons. Oh, and my bathroom sink leaking pipe did not leak while I was gone, even though the sink container did overflow into the sink, so that's good.

Diane Hi Diane --- the kind of long term caregiving your sister is doing I can sure sympathize about the toll it can take! I'm glad to hear her health is holding up and that she is interested in at least a little Christmas decorating. I was almost afraid to ask even because I actually feared I'd missed something in regard to your BIL. I'm sure glad your pipe was ok while you were gone! ~Chris~

MINDFULNESS POST
I went back and took another look at the book that started me thinking about mindfulness. I think I was so excited to find another person who was speaking the truth about the medical model of mental issues, that I didn’t pay enough attention to the second half of the book.
The second half talked about finding time for meaning in your life, but I felt like he didn’t spend enough time on identifying what would constitute meaning for each individual person. Now that I’ve gone back and skimmed some of the second part of the book, I’ve found a few sections where he gives examples and suggestions.
One chapter lists meaning opportunities that “our species regularly experiences as meaningful and valuable.”
1. Love 2. Good works 3. Creativity 4. Excellence 5. Relationships 6. Stewardship 7. Experimentation 8. Pleasure 9. Self-Actualization 10. Service 11. Career 12. Attitude 13. Achievement 14. Appreciation
Some of these are easy to understand, some probably need explanation or discussion, and some sound like they’re the same thing , or least overlap (for example, Good works, Service, and Stewardship).
He suggests thinking about these, figuring out which of them is most important to you, as well as exploring which others could or should be important.
I think the step after that is thinking of examples in our daily lives that would reflect these, and maybe most important, to measure what our actual daily lives are like in comparison to what they could be if we were making more time for what’s important to us. More specifically, to think about what we do every day and ask if each thing we do reflects our most important meaning (or at least, isn’t the OPPOSITE of what we find meaningful). Not everything we do is going to feel meaningful, especially if we have an unfulfilling job, or if we have to spend a lot of time doing other things we don't like to do. But I think it's worth exploring whether we're doing things that actually go against what we consider the meaningful values in our lives. I don't think there's anything as draining and depressing as that. There’s a lot to talk about here, but the one thing that kind of jumped out at me was number 12, Attitude. It almost seems like it should be the basic first step to finding meaning. In fact, our attitude is what’s going to determine if we’re able to find meaning in any of the other areas.
Diane
