Oops, I keep skipping days...
Time is going by so fast. I'm so excited to have half days off for the next 3 days--that includes Christmas eve and Christmas day. It's been about 7 years since I've had free time on those 2 days. I have a dog visitor on the evening of the 23rd and 25th, but that isn't work, it's fun!

WOW! Today the client dropping off the dog that's staying with me for the evening came into my LR, and she said "oh, it feels so tranquil in here!"
Now, I have my Christmas lights on, and there was a slow Christmas song playing at the moment (as opposed to the one playing right now, which is punk). And, I felt compelled to tell her that my other rooms have boxes of books filling them up (she's a big reader and we talk about our book collections all the time). But WOW! I couldn't believe she said that.

MINDFULNESS POST
After listing the “meaning opportunities” in my last post, I decided to try to rate them by importance, so that I could see which came out at the top.
I found I couldn’t rate them straight from 1-14, because so many of them are essential to life, and imagining a life without some of them didn’t seem possible.
I was able to group them into 2 categories, though, Most Importance, Least Importance—although Least Importance didn’t mean “not”, it just meant comparatively, if I had to put some above the others.
Here’s the original list with some added words of explanation from the book, to clarify the meaning of some of the concepts:
1. Love (affection, kindness, generosity, intimacy ) 2. Good works (actions that reflect our principles and our values) 3. Creativity (using our personal talents and resources to create something OR to solve challenges) 4. Excellence 5. Relationships (of all kinds) 6. Stewardship (care for and attention to the world in which we live, the human and animal creatures of this world, and the ideas and institutions that maintain civilization at its best) 7. Experimentation 8. Pleasure 9. Self-Actualization (having all of our resources, abilities, personality characteristics and interests be reflected in our pursuit of a meaning life) 10. Service (being of help, both individually and communally) 11. Career (working in a regular, productive and effective way in a chosen field) 12. Attitude (being in the present moment, deciding what to concentrate on, controlling self-talk so that it becomes forward-looking instead of rehashing past problems 13. Achievement 14. Appreciation
And here’s my grouping:
Most Important
Good works Stewardship Service Attitude Appreciation Love Relationships Pleasure Self-Actualization
Lesser Importance
Excellence Achievement Creativity Experimentation Career
I guess it’s impossible to choose some over others, because some are incorporated into others. I was thinking that if I could choose only one of these, it would be Self-Actualization, but that’s sort of cheating, because if I was living my life exactly as I chose with every aspect of my self being satisfied, it would incorporate a lot of those other categories.
The second thing I would say is pleasure, because if you’re not enjoying your life, what is the purpose of being here? You might be enjoying your life by taking pleasure in service, or your career, or in relationships, but it still means you have pleasure—so that’s kind of cheating too.
Anyway, this exercise made me think, which was the whole point. And seeing that so many of these categories feel so important, the next step is seeing how they are reflected in my current life, and which are lacking.
Also, defining “good works” as “actions that reflect our principles and values” gives two more lists to think about.

Hi Diane -- your mindfulness posts are awesome!!! That book has been one of the best I've working with (and continue to work in it periodically!) This week our group is focusing on goals for 2016 so that's the emphasis for Tuesday night's support group. I have never been good at goals. I'm best at doing things that are right in front of me, which at times I've felt like a tumbleweed going wherever the wind blows me - so I'm seeing the importance of having goals. The only area I ever did fairly well with goals is/was decluttering and work I did on this site. I guess I need to think about transferable skills from that to other types of goals. Ooops I am rambling on YOUR thread. Just wanted to say I really like reading your mindfulness thoughts and posts. ~Chris~
