I am getting booted out of chat several times a day and I think it is happening to other people too. Is there something new? A problem? A new setting? I have never had much problem with getting booted from chat before and I don't think it is my internet dropping because no other site is affected.
There seem to be far fewer people in chat these last few days also; I suspect that people get frustrated with having to sign in over and over - I know I do - and they just give up and stop coming in. Like - a week ago there would be 10-15 or more people in chat in the evenings. The other night there were three.
Can this be fixed?
Thanks moonglow

Hi moonglow. Yes, this was a new setting. I'm sorry. I've been hearing that people have been forgetting to log out and are staying logged in 24/7. I changed the setting to automatically log us out when we've been idle for a while. Unfortunately, there is no way (that I know of) to set the interval. (Maybe Greg knows of a way to set this interval before idle chatters are bumped out. A couple hours would be nice.) I'll change the setting back, since it isn't allowing people to stay logged in long enough to get their challenges completed. I'm off to change the setting now...

Okay. Should be better now. Sorry again for the inconvenience.

There is no setting for specific idle time to be set. You can only set it for kick if idle Yes or No. The interval I think is 10 minutes. It might be longer but I can't remember.

Thanks, Greg. Since we need a minimum of 15 minutes, I guess we'll stick with the eternal login. If there is a request list for future features, a variable limit for idle chatters would be nice.

I was starting to feel guilty for being "idle" for so "long" on my 15 minute chats. I s'pose it makes sense to boot idle chatters to be booted, especially on a forum with a few people who have anxiety. I begin to wonder if I've done something wrong and am being ignored....

We have had a few people who logged into an apparently full chat room, only to discover that absolutely NO ONE responds, despite repeated greetings and appeals for challenges. We don't think people are deliberately ignoring anyone! We suspect, especially since this tends to happen late in America, that people are forgetting to log out.
The upshot is that people who enter a room full of chatters expect to be able to talk, and when no one says anything it feels a bit like shunning. If we could set a reasonable time limit for people to remain quiet then get logged out automatically, we could avoid this scenario.
I might have to pay visits late at night to log folks out myself!

Another idea is for people who are away from keyboard to set their status on "away". That way, newcomers will know they're not being ignored. Putting the "star" for challenging next to your name makes sense only if you intend to be back within the next 15-45 minutes. (and yeah i'm guilty of forgetting too) How to edit your status:
Look at this diagram:========================================== Notice the list of names where it says "Online".
When you're in the chatroom, click on the "arrow" to the right of the word "Online".
Set your status there to "away".

I know I sometimes have to remind myself that people don't use the features that Lion's so kindly demonstrated. There are many times I go in and it looks like there would be activity because there are like 7 people logged in, yet no one responds. I try to use my status indicator as much as possible, but I too forget sometimes.

I can't even get chat to pull up. All I get is the welcome page.
