Chat was working fine a couple days ago, after i updated to Java 7, v45. I tested in all browsers.
Now it won't work in any browser
i get this pop-up error message:
======================
and the console says:
I get left with a large grey box where chat should be loading, but it never loads
Tried in IE8, Firefox 24, Chrome 30.0.1599.101, And Opera 12.16
I tried clearing the java cache, and deleting any stored applets, and then trying again, but that didn't help.

Java has had a slew of recent updates due to security issues, and they've also added new security requirements for developers to adhere to. While the AddonChat software itself has had no related security issues during this time, we've been forced to release minor updates to accommodate changes being made by Java and various web browses. Because of this, it's imperative that users update to the latest version of Java from www.java.com/getjava - It's also strongly advised that upon doing so that they clear their Java cache from the Java Control Panel ( www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml ) before restarting their browser and reloading the chat room. This will ensure they're using both the very latest edition of Java and AddonChat.

Then it stopped working. cleared the javacache from control panel again, no luck. Edit to add: Greg, I realize now that you posted your post as a generic message to anyone having recent difficulties with chat. And that you needed to get that message out to everyone. I totally understand. Question to Greg: Did you read my specific opening post to this thread? Has anyone reported the "null" message?

I do see that you have deleted cache files from your java console. Have you also deleted cookies from your browser?

Chat seems to be working fine now. I updated Java & went in to test it out. Have you been able to get in since your last post, Lion?

eagle and Greg and Celeste As i said earlier in this thread, chat worked fine from ALL my browsers after i updated java to version 7 update 45 I came in and chatted with people in the chatroom. It was fine for a couple of days. Java also worked on other sites in all my browsers. And then YESTERDAY, it started giving me the "null" message. In any and all browsers. Note that the null message doesn't appear immediately. Basically chat keeps trying to load but nothing happens, and then the popup happens with the null message. if you read my post above, the text of the message I got seem to imply that my computer refuses to recognize and/or load the applet. I think it's an applet issue. oh wait. I don't know ... hang on. let me test something else ...

oh wait. I don't know ... hang on. let me test something else ... Okay i went to our "backup chatroom" which runs via parachat. same problems there in all browsers. "Null" when trying to find the parachat applet. Same issue in all four browsers. So that makes me realize it's not the websites, or the chat applications, or the java. It has to be my computer. What's different about my computer in past two days?
Aha.
I updated my free antivirus "Avast" to "Avast 2014".I did a bit of research and discovered that the default for Avast 2014 is to block all java. Because it thinks it knows what's best for me. Sigh.I am now googling the avast forums to find a solution. Thanks Greg -- this one wasn't anything you could fix ... But you could let people in the addonchat forums know about this "Avast 2014 issue" with java.

it works now. YAY. I had to adjust the settings in avast 2014 to exclude all the java executable files. (i.e. "exclude them from being forbidden") And then java worked in all browsers. Oddly, I just went back to the settings to take a screenshot of what i did, and the java is no longer listed in exclusions, but somehow it still works, so ... I'll take it
