Dso went through the mail a little while ago, and wrote down some information for me regarding his accounts, login info, etc. It's a start toward me making up that budget and managing this mail/finance squalor a bit better. I hope to get my files set up and a system in place this coming week after he leaves again for work travel.

Got water bill paid and checked into calls to be made. I reorganized my financial aspects last month and am working with a credit counselor and paper didn't go thru. I have to call them to find out why. I balanced my checkbook.

I did this the day before yesterday: While searching for info on my furniture in my file cabinet, I put 10 papers mostly from 1991 & 2008 into the recycle bag.
Also, yesterday, I did this: Went thru the mail. Put 8 in the recycle bag, 2 "to be shred", 1 into trash.
March 1st -- looked over bills, found a receipt to match up to one questionable figure, okayed them all to pay. Put bills together in front of Office in a Bag, wrote due dates & date to pay on them.

Kitty woke me and my daughter up at 4 a.m. so after I resettled her and got the kitty settled I balanced my checkbook then I read. After getting daughter off to school early cause of rain I worked on financial squalor by going online and printing then filled out information for the childcare eligibility list so I can go back to work. I also filled out insurance papers. All before 9 a.m.

My free transit pass went into effect yesterday March 1st like clockwork. A new law provides free public transit for seniors and disabled... civic kindness in action. I did my part by promptly filling out the application and mailing it back the very same day that I received it in the mail. I am keeping up with my habit of opening and processing the mail every day.
In my olden messy days of yore, the unopened envelope would have been set aside and eventually buried in a pile of junk, and by the time I found it again months later, the offer would have expired.
This free pass will save me $23 a month, or $276 a year... very much needed and appreciated.

I haven't dealt with paper much the last couple of days except to open my mail which isn't a bad thing either.
Glad to read of accomplishments of others here.

cando - You sound like me, dealing with papers from random years like 1991 and 2008 in one sitting. on getting those outta there!! I have no idea how papers with dates that far apart end up in one box or stack. Mischievous elves. lostchild - Woo-hoo! All before 9am!! papermoon - That's awesome! Getting that discount is like somebody handing you a check for $276 - just for filling out and sending in a form, but I don't often see it that way. Good for you for doing this!! angela - Opening mail is huge when things aren't "right." One of my stumbling blocks to opening mail has been my mind/heart getting stuck somewhere I don't want to be or don't like, or (insert laundry list of issues). It's complicated and seems to be multifaceted. I'll just call it my "megrims" - saves bandwidth. NOT SO More papers and more papers and yet more papers. I'm drowning in a sea of dried pulp. Bleh. But, I'm whittling away at it. A REAL Dso and I had a nice little talk about handling home stuff more from a team aspect. He thought he was taking burden off me, instead of keeping me uncertain, insecure and spinning out. He went through some of the pending mail I had sorted and organized from the past several weeks, and wrote down some info about it for me. We still have more "together work" to do so we have everything all in one place and easier to track and maintain, but I think I have enough to set up a tracking system for it. I wish my muddled mind would cooperate about that. I liken this to what I imagine professional authors call "writer's block." It's mental lock-down. I think I am going to spend a few hours this evening sorting through some really old stuff, maybe pick a category such as my old work files, and at least get that type of paper all in one place and sorted to appropriate files. That would make me feel better, knowing that stuff is organized and I can put my hands on it should I need to reference it. Sift and sort, sort and sift.

Threw away about 25-30 old "offer" type mail, after opening and reviewing to make sure it wasn't a bill. I wanted to review these things (mortgage renewal, credit cards, various insurances, various memberships for retirement, auto-club and interest groups, etc.), but I don't think I want to take the time to sift through them and make decisions about it now. I'm sure some of these folks will keep sending me things to consider! I have gone through A, B and C of the alpha sorting I've done, although there are several other boxes, file drawers and stacks to sort to their alpha piles. I need to back off on this and return to establishing and fixing my current files for this year, including setting up proper files; devising a system for managing, tracking and whatever else I think I need; and making a working budget. I hope I haven't driven away everyone else with my lengthy posts here.

Irisheyes -- Your posts are wonderful! You aren't driving anyone away. Just keep on doing. i love that shift & sort, sort & shift. I don't know why I have this is my head right now... I think it is from a song in a musical like, maybe Oklahoma. With me it is more "Ya hurry, then you hesitate". Wash & repeat. So, Monday the 2nd... I paid the mini storage bill. Yesterday, I made some financial donations. That's about it with papers. Isn't that pitiful? Need to at least keep up with the daily incoming papers... but nope that did not happen the past few days. papermoon -- I can so relate to what you posted about missing out on opportunities to save money just from either not going thru mail & also from not responding right away or doing whatever required action. So, great job getting the form competed so you can save some money on the transit pass!!! Getting ready to go pay some bills, now. CD

So, Monday the 2nd... I paid the mini storage bill. Yesterday, I made some financial donations. That's about it with papers. Isn't that pitiful? No, it most certainly is NOT pitiful! It's superb! In the past couple of days, I too paid my storage bill. I also paid for my new Italian class promptly at the first class meeting. And I returned my past-due library books and paid the fine (a whopping 40 cents). I picked up my SS check, banked it, and bought monthly provisions. NOT pitiful! So what, I didn't work on old papers. I'm still proud of myself for not letting these current things become old. And you should feel good about yourself too, cando. I know I shouldn't use the words "you should" but this is a good exception to the rule.

I set my appointment this morning for energy assistance. It isn't until April, they may be out of money for the program by then but maybe not, it has been a mild winter.
So I am counting that though since phone calls or such to any "official" sort of place makes me scared.
